USB COM port usage on Xoom?

Hello-
I'm new to Android development but not new to hardware design-

I am trying to access the USB port on my Motorola Xoom- I have a homebuilt USB device that acts as a CDC/ACM serial device.

I am running ICS 4.0.3 and have rooted the device. I am connecting through the ADB port but have to disconnect to connect my device- I guess a great place to start is how can I see log messages (to monitor USB connect) without using the ADB port??

Sorry for the ignorance but I promise to be a quick learner if someone can educate me a little!
