100% cpu usage... help!

hi im kinda new here.. but. recently.. like 2-3 days ago i've been suffering from long startup load times on my comp... and just today i tried ctrl alt delete.. and it shows up as 100% Cpu usage. and it stays there. ive run multiple virus scans and spyware/adware scans using spybot, adadware, and zone alarms for virus scans and there were 4 viruses, which were eliminated... but i still get the problem and i was wondering if someone could have a look at it and help me cuz this is really annoying. thanks =)

heres my hijackthis log.

A few things to start with:
  • If you haven't already done so, drop into safe mode, and check to see if you are still getting the heavy usage. If you are, that's a seriously bad sign, but it shouldn't be the case. Disable your system restore, then run your AV and AS scans again while in safe mode; often they can detect and remove things which actively block scanning in regular mode, but which depend on startup items to run. Don't forget to reset the System Restore afterwards.
  • If you aren't doing so already, disable your P2P clients while using the computer for other things. I would recommend getting rid of Kazaa outright (it is a known spyware vector), or at least replacing it with Kazaa Revolution, but that's your call.
  • Remove any toolbars and tray items you aren't regularly using. Since you've got Firefox, you can probably get rid of most or all of the IE toolbars and never notice the lack.
  • If you use several IM clients, consider replacing them with a multi-protocol client such as gaim or Trillian. Not only do these usually take up less memory than several separate clients, they are generally more secure, as they aren't loaded down with the junk that AIM, MSN Messenger, and Yahoo! Messenger come with.
  • If you haven't already, get a cleaning tool like PurgeIE and flush your history, cache, cookies, etc. Just doing it in IE isn't enough, as there are hidden caches which it does not clear.
  • Don't forget general maintainence like clearing temp files, disk defragging and compacting the registry (though make sure you've backed it up first).
  • Uninstall any programs (from Add/Remove Programs; you almost never want to simply delete a program by hand) you don't expect to be using again; if all else fails, you can re-install them later, so long as you don't delete the data.

Here are some of the known non-critical items which can be safely disabled, with some minor loss of ease of use in a few cases (follow the links for more information):

C:\WINDOWS\kdx\KHost.exe
C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\MsPMSPSv.exe
C:\Program Files\iPod\bin\iPodService.exe

Here are some of the questionable items which you probably need to get rid of; they are located in unusual areas and aren't readily identified. Do not simply delete them now; try renaming the files and see the results. Again, make sure you have a registry backup before removing the keys.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\uljmsoy.dll
C:\documents and settings\owner\local settings\temp\ypr.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\wima.exe

These items below should definitely be removed:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\?hkntfs.exe
C:\Program Files\AdwareAlert\AdwareAlert.Exe -boot - this is believed to be a bogus AS tool, and may be a spyware vector itself

Comments and corrections welcome. Hope this helps.

thank you SO much! i did everything you said except these:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\uljmsoy.dll
C:\documents and settings\owner\local settings\temp\ypr.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\wima.exe

only because i'm still unsure. (sorry im a total beginner at this and im so clueless)

i renamed uljmsoy.dll and ran hijackthis, and it said filemissing under the uljmsoy.dll thing, so im assuming its nothing bad, so i rename it back

but for. ypr.exe i could not find it, i only find ypr.dll
and for wima.exe, i could not find it at all.

so i was wondering if those 2 need to be fixed.

thanks for your help again =)

As I've said earlier, you might want to try using a third party client that supports the MSN protocol. Trillian is well regarded, and I can personally vouch for gaim - it's a bit plain, but it's nice and reliable, and much lighter weight than the MSN client.
