Unhappy Another hijacking. Just need someone to confirm I'm "fixing" the right files.

Yes, another victim of this home page hijacking! I'm glad I found similar threads about this nastiness at Dev Shed. Once again, you guys are the best!

OK, so I did the Hijack This exercise but I'm not 100% sure of which files I can "fix/delete" using the H.T. program. I'm of the opinion that anything with "R1" and "013" in front of it has something to do with the hijacking of my home page. Here's the log -- can someone please confirm if I'm on the right track? Please and thanks very much for your time and expertise.

Hi Deanna475,

You have a coolwebsearch infection, among other things. Please download CWShredder from Here

Press "Check for Update" before you press "Fix" download any new updates available.

Close ALL browser windows or it may not work. Unzip it to a convenient location and select "Fix" (do not just Scan). It will automatically remove the infections.

Reboot and post a new log.

Tom

Hi Tom and thank you for your advice. It's much appreciated. I did as you instructed, did a "fix" with CWShredder and re-scanned with Hijack This to give you the following log report:

My start page is back to Google, I'm not detecting any re-directing of URLs in the status bar and the speed of my computer has improved dramatically. But still I worry .... Given the updated log report, does my computer get a clean bill of health?

Again, please and thanks for your time, Tom.

The only thing I am concerned about is having 2 antivirus programs running at the same time. Do you ever see any conflicts?

Other than that you are clean!

Hi Tom. Thanks for the clean bill of health. Things appear to have returned to normal and I'm grateful for that.

As to having two anti-virus programs running, I only use Norton to check for viruses. What other anti-virus program do you see from the log report that I'm running? Do Spy Bot and Ad Aware count as virus programs? If so, I run them independently from Norton and never at the same time. So far, no problems in that department!

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AVG_CC] C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVG6\avgcc32.exe /STARTUP

Is AVG anti-virus control center. Also enables scheduled tests, Outlook E-mail plug-in and automatic updates

Maybe it was installed previously? See if it is listed in Control Panel > Add/Remove programs and you can uninstall it.

Thumbs up

Ahhhh, I see what you speak of now! Yes, I believe that was already installed when I purchased the computer. It came preloaded with all kinds of stuff (95% of which I deleted but apparently I missed this one!) and since I've always used Norton, I just didn't think about any other anti-virus program. Never gave this AVG a second's thought. But, since you pointed it out and it serves no purpose insofar as I'm concerned, it's outta there!!

Once again, thanks for your advice! You are a busy person with all of these nasty hijack attempts and so many people looking for help -- myself included. I thank you for your time and expertise. [insert "thumbs up" smilie if there was one!]

Deanna
