Anti Virus Provides Only 2 % Protection

Friends
I just came to know from an authorised reseller of Symantec Antivirus , that the protection provided by any anty virus product is only 2% , against any virus attack.

is it true ?

Hi Pranayeshwar,

I agree, your antivirus software protects you less than most people think! I have run across viruses on different machines and until I right-click the file to check it's properties, the antivirus doesn't even know its there! Once I check the file's properties, up comes the antivirus saying "Virus found!" LOL

Layered security is the answer. Don't just depend on one product or procedure to protect you.

Anybody else have any input on this?

Tom

I have given up installing AntiVirus products at my clients (networked) PCs. I am using a firewall at the client's site. The firewall uses Clam Antivirus to check for mail viruses, and I haven't seen any of them slip through yet.

Currently most viruses/trojans/worms come through the mail or by visiting naughty or warez sites. Most Single User AntiVirus products unfortunately use up up to 50% of your performance and add another minute or two of load time for your operating system. This in view of the fact that they will only save you from actual viruses that are mostly obsolete.

Dear Tom

It 's true that the figures are very strange when we talk about the utility.
At the same time when one come to know about the market share of the antivirus , like say for the Symantec its revenue share per annum is around 1200 to 1500 million US$.

Seeing these figures one can conclude that if the symantec could have provided protection in the range of 80%, it would have earned the revenue of 48000 million US$ per annum.

Thanks
Pranayeshwar vashisth

Pranayeshwar,

I agree, much more needs to be done and some companies are starting to do it. There's been a lot of chatter about MS buying giant Antispyware. MS has the resources to develop this already great product into what the market has needed for a long time! Let's just hope they offer it for free I know, dream on!
