AV new reputation protection

Hello,

in the last year the AV companies started to publish their new way of detecting malware, they call it Reputation protection or cloud AV.
Anyway, it seems to me like nothing really changed,
so I was wondering if any of you know what exactly does this method means? how does it help to identify malware?
Does it really works or catches anything new?
