Bad Sectors

I have a quick ques. I suspect bad sectors on my hard drive because "System Suite" said it couldn't defrag until the disk was repaired or quarantined.

I rt. clicked C: drive/properties/tools/advanced(i think)/cked both boxes, fix bad sectors and another one I can't remember......btw I'm trying to run scan disk...anyway, when I come back a cpl hrs. later, it's finished w/ the scan, i guess, and it is asking for my password...no record of what the scan found or did not find.

Is there a good on-line free scan disk? or, Are the windows scan disk results somewhere for me to access?

Hi again -blu-,

Please click Start > Run > enter "cmd" (without the quotes). A window will pop-up > type "chkdsk /f" (without the quotes) > windows will ask you if chkdsk can be run the next time you restart your computer > hit "Y" and then Enter

Restart your computer and chkdsk will run before you hard drive is mounted, it will display the results.

Tom

Hi Tom,

Sorry if my reply is tardy. Apparently, while reading the 'stickys', my eyes kept getting 'glued' and this upset the cadence I use for more efficient reading. Hence, my focus being impaired, I may also have less comprehension.

I clicked start/run/typed in cmd (sans quotes)/typed chkdsk/ windows did indeed ask me if I wanted to run the ck next time I booted because it couldn't do it with resources being used at that current time. I chose 'y' /enter...

I restarted cpu, and the small black window w/ the white type began a step by step procedure that quite frankly didn't facinate me enough to justify neglecting other important things, which I did.

So I come back, a short time later, and it (cpu) is asking for my password.

Winston Churchill said, "There is nothing more exhilarating than to be shot at with no result." I would add to that, "And nothing more frustrating than to run disk ck., w/o result."

I don't know where the reults are. I don't think it scanned much in such a short amt. of time either.

Heh... you crack me up

Let's try this:

Right-click My Computer > Manage > on the left pane expand the plus sign next to Event Viewer > click on Application. In the Source column, look for the Winlogon item. Double click it and you should see the results of your Chkdsk scan.

Let me know how it goes.

YES!! Tom, I found the scan result exactly where you described. Now, what was I looking for again?...hmmm...oh yeah, bad sectors. Well, it says none were found, but the cpu is running like a top now. I got some upgrades for windows and my motherboard, so maybe that did something.

Thank you so much for your concern and explanation. All I had to do was contact you, and the problem is fixed. You didn't even require a 'Hijack This' log so in essence, you fixed my cpu w/ your eyes closed. Now THAT'S progress!

Until Next Time,
-blu-
