Best server protection - windows 2003 enterprise
Hi,
I am having a Windows 2003 Enterprise server and I am curious from the Professionals to know, which ANTIVIRUS, ANTI-BUG, ANTI-TROJAN HORSE ... Software are you advising to install for maximum security? I have also ISA from Microsoft, but never tried it out. Thanks! |

Norton has some pretty powerful utilities for your use. Something like SystemWorks maybe? Of course these files cost money if you are going to get them legally.

SystemWorks
I got some troubles with it and it did not want to get installed to Windows 2003. It said, I need as Server version. Norton AV 2004/2005 disables scrioting, if not for server versions. Do you know what ISA has so special about the security? Dejan |

hello.
Of the freely available software suites that are there i reccomend a combination of AVG as a virus scanner and ZoneAlarm as a firewall. Both are as efficient as you will get for not paying, and work well in combination. ![]() If you are willing to pay to protect your pc, well then there are lots of options you can take a look at. FOR A COMPLETE SECURITY SUITE: I like what i hear about Trend Micro's PC-cillin Internet Security 2005. Seems a good buy. Its a complete suite (antivirus, trojan detector, firewall, anti spyware and adware, and anti spam) and worth the price. tech support over the phone is free. FIREWALL: The pro version of the ZoneAlarm firewall is one of the best in my opinion, and is worth the extra expense. But be warned there is not much documentation available for it, and their phone support is a bit pricy. Mind you this is just a fire wall and not a complete suite. ANTIVIRUS: For just virus scanning and protection, well AVG is my choice. But norton seems to work decently well. Too many problems with norton to use comfortably on a server though. i removed my norton 2004 because it was messing with too much of stuff. But for security, norton never missed anything for my system back then. This is a site with a decent review, although i do not like their first choice software. http://anti-virus-software-review.toptenreviews.com/ The following is a quote from that site , that you might find handy in your quest for a good choice. Quote:
All that said and done, the main thing about security is how well you configure your system and how carefully and deligently you check up on it. Security starts with the system administrator and follows from there. No amount of software will protect a badly configured machine. And even if your system is well configured, there will be new exploits discovered all the time. So the best thing to protect yourself form these new threats is to read security advisory's from several resources, and check your system logs regularily. ![]() Cheers ![]()

If you are looking for a anti-virus solution for corporate use (IE server to workstation) and protecting a network then the link that was provided is not what you want as those are stand alone AV solutions and only 3 of the 10 run on 2003 server. For a corporate environment you need an AV that can control and monitor the workstations as well as install to workstations remotely in this case Symantec corporate or enterprise edition is my choice for Novell and Microsoft server platforms and is easy to deploy to workstations and set user policies. The enterprise edition comes with a proxy server that scans downloads and mail security that scans e-mails and joins real time blacklists. Version 10 also has spyware security and has alarms if someone tries to disable it. other alternatives are Computer Associates E-Trust AV also nice for remote installations of workstations and can create groups quite easily it suxxors on Novell servers though. Computer Assocites also has a suite SCM or secure content manager this is a mess to setup and to do it right takes 3 PCs LOL! for a firewall I only recommend hardware solutions IE PIX, sonicwalls, etc . another Nice AV solution for the network border is McAfee webshield put in bridge mode it is invisible to the network and scans HTTP,FTP,SMTP,POP3 and joins blacklists as well as contet filtering of web sites I love these things (runs on linux and is a hardware appliance). I dont like mcafee at the server or desktop however.
