certain sites crash my browsers!

I am on winXP home with SP2, broadband cable, I use zonealarm and AVG. I have the windows firewall set to "off". I use Mozilla Firefox and IE6. When I click or enter certain links or URLs, it automatically crashes my browser, and it doesnt matter if its IE or Firefox. Today I found it does this on download.com and also softpedia.com. I scanned for spyware/adware and that made no difference. These are not the only sites, but I noticed them specifically today because I was looking for an extension for Firefox. Any ideas about this??

(^~;?(I'm not so familiar with scripts, but if both of them suffer.)

The sites should be using javascripts and forcing the browser unreasonable things even if it is a bug or ill-willed. Adjust the setting of javascripts or disable it. Otherwise select the browser which can switch the scripts setting at one click. Free download sites are convenient but likely to make the browser pop up many advertisement windows.

I tried it, I disabled java and javascript. it still closed the browser anyway. I tested it on download.com. I dont get pop ups, firefox blocks them. Even though its not only the downloads sites, I googled "downloads" and started clicking on the results to see which other ones would do it. tucows was ok, zdnet was ok, macromedia was ok, and itprodownloads was ok. freedownloadscenter.com did it, and simtel.net did it too. this is so annoying!

(^^;?(I've been to simtet.net now, though I don't want to do.)

Then I released all scripts. A few windows poped up, but they were not so evil ones. So much so that, it must be due to SP2. SP2 causes various troubles, many examples in this forum. Have a look at SP2 pages and disable particularly new functions of security. Otherwise you would have to upgrade suspectful drivers including bios, or just uninstall SP2.

Hi suckered_in,

Before considering such drastic measures as uninstalling SP2 or attempting to update BIOS, consider posting a HijackThis log in the Antivirus Protection forum:

http://forums.devshed.com/forumdisplay.php?f=117

(^^;?(Though I don't think it is so drastic yet, but Tom seems to have spare time now in virus section.)

If he offers, you may post there before this, nothing to lose. However is it not drastic also to delete the suspectful items manually by Hijacklog?

I noticed there are a couple entries for webhancer, but I checked all the .dll's and files its supposed to have installed (according to the webhancer removal instructions on cexx.org) and there are none of them.

Figured it out!!!

I checked my system for hijackers, adware, etc.. with about 4 different progs just to overlap my results, and cleaned it all out. Nothing fixed the issue, so I started playing with my processes. Turns out that it was System Mechanic Popup Stopper that would not let any of those sites load, including cnet, which sucked because that meant I couldnt get the new zonealarm update. As long as I turn off Popup Stopper, they load just fine. Thx to all who offered suggestions!

Hi suckered_in,

I see at leat one spyware program running on your machine....

If you would like, update HijackThis and post a fresh log and I'll check it out.

Please update HijackThis, you are using an outdated version:

Open HijackThis, click Config > Misc Tools > Check for Update online

Or download a copy of version 1.98.2 at:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html

Post a fresh log with this new version.

Tom
