Lightbulb Computer Freezing

I somehow downloaded the Marketscore Virus/Parasite. I tried running Ad-Aware, Spybot, and Hijack This, and I've not had any success. Is their anything here that isn't supposed to be here (or should be here), and how do I fix it?

Thanks in Advance!

You might want to print these instructions for reference, as you will be off the internet while using HijackThis.

Please move or unzip HijackThis to a permanent folder such as C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe It is important that it is in it's own folder as it will make important backups of what we will fix. Please open My Computer > double-click your C:\ drive > File > New > Folder > name it HJT and put HijackThis into that folder.

Then….

Logoff your internet connection. Run HijackThis, close all browsers and any other windows, place a checkmark next to the following items. Click "fix checked".

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.trafficswarm.com/cgi-bin/swarm.cgi?272297&ee7607e89b9dbfcabb78101a07902ad8

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [\IEService.exe] C:\DOCUME~1\ALLUSE~1\APPLIC~1\IESERV~1\IEService.exe

This is a resource hog that can be fixed also:

O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE

Boot into Safe Mode. Reboot your computer, start tapping F8 when it first starts booting, select Safe Mode.

Make sure your computer is configured to show all files and folders.
Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden Files and Folders heading select Show Hidden Files and Folders.
Uncheck the Hide Protected Operating System Files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

Delete the following folders:

C:\DOCUME~1\ALLUSE~1\APPLIC~1\IESERV~1

Reboot normally and post a fresh log.

Tom

Lightbulb New Logfile

The computer still freezes (I don't know if there is another step that you were going to tell me). This is my log. Also my firewall asks whenever I reboot if I should let Generic Host 32 access the internet? If I say no the internet won't work. Is that supposed to be there?

Generic host process for Win32 Services is usually related to svchost.exe and is normally Microsoft related. It can be realed to malware activity, but I don't see it in your log. I would say it is ok to allow it access to the internet.

Did you recently install XP Service Pack 2?

Lightbulb Yes/No

I have installed service pack 2.

Is there anything else I could try, because the problem still persists. When I run it in safe mode, it doesn't freeze? Does that help you at all?

Thanks for your help so far!

cardine,

The reason I asked about SP2 is I noticed you have Zone Alarm installed. It is a known conflict with SP2. Microsoft says it's up to the vendors to make their programs compliant. So far, I haven't heard of anythig about an update for Zone Alarm regarding SP2, but it might come soon. You might see if you have the most current version: 5.1.033

Also Zone Alarm will probably conflict with the new firewall built in SP2. You may consider disabling XP's firewall.

Here's a list of programs that do not work with SP2:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=884130&product=windowsxpsp2

You might want to check this list to see if you have any other conflicting software.

Keep us posted.

Tom

In light of the recent infections, let's purge system restore.

1 Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2 Click the System Restore tab.
3 Check the "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives" check box.
4 Click Apply
5 this will delete all existing restore points. Click Yes to do this.
6 Click OK.

Reboot

1 Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2 Click the System Restore tab.
3 Uncheck the "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives" check box.
4 Click Apply
5 Create a new Restore Point.
6 Click OK.

These are tools that will help keep you from getting infected again:

SpywareBlaster will block bad ActiveX and malevolent cookies. http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

SpywareGuard provides a real-time protection solution against spyware that is a great addition to SpywareBlaster's protection method. http://www.wilderssecurity.net/spywareguard.html

IE-SPYAD puts over 4000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
http://www.staff.uiuc.edu/~ehowes/resource.htm#IESPYAD

All are very small free programs. Occasionally check for updates.

Check for updates for Windows and Internet Explorer every week or so. Download each critical update one by one, rebooting when necessary.. Repeat this until you get the message "no critical updates available" http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

Please take a minute to read: So how did I get infected in the first place?

Sorry,

Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore > tick Create a Restore Point > Next > enter a name for the Restore Point Creation (Today, Removed Spyware, etc.) > Create > Close.

The date and time will automatically be added.

Lightbulb Is This It?

A couple of minutes ago my computer froze up (again ) After about five seconds though, it unfroze and displayed the following message:
The nv4_disp display driver has stopped working normally. Save your work and reboot the system to restore full display functionality. The next time you reboot the machine a dialog will be displayed giving you a chance to upload data about this failure to Microsoft.

This has happened once before...
Also (as you might guess) the computer went into 4 bit color and very big writing (600x800, something like that).

Does this have anything to do with the computer issue???

Angry nv4_disp.dll

I'm sorry for double posting, but I have so more information.

Right now I am typing from a different computer. When my other computer starts up it displays the blue screen (that talks about the driver being in an infinite loop). I can only log-on in safe mode. When that happened I searched for nv4_disp.dll and I found 4 of them:

C:\I386
C:\Windows32
C:\Drivers\Video\Addon
C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\386

I scanned them all, and they turned up okay. Is there anyway to repair these files, or update them?

The file seems to be related to your Nvidia graphics card drivers. You are not alone, see here:

http://www.google.com/search?lr=&ie...&q=nv4_disp.dll

You might want to read through the first several hits. Seems to be an issue with different versions of the drivers.

Have you changed/updated video drivers lately?
