computer keeps restarting

Hi guys,

I have ap roblem with my laptop. For some reason when I start up my computer it keeps restarting. It doesn't even get to the log in screen, just restarts. I've tried starting in safe mode, but same problem, it just restarts.

I was wondering if you had any idea what the problem could be and how to solve it. Keep in mind I am not able to post a hijack this log as I can't even access my computer (just restarts).

I dunno if the following information will help. I was downloading a program (game) before this happened. I had finished installing it and was prompted to reboot. I did so and it's been rebooting ever since. Just to let you know, I've downloaded this game 3 or 4 times in the past from the same site and this has never happened.

I would greatly appreciate any help as soon as possible.

Thanks

It might be a hardware problem, but i cant help you there since thats hard to troubleshoot on a laptop.

You will need to re-install your windows on top of your current windows. I suspect there is a 'stop error'. Within windows, there is an option to reboot on 'stop errors'. Unfortunately, the option defaults to enable. That means, you will never see the 'stop error' but instead get a reboot.

Re-install your OS on top of your old OS. That should cure the 'stop error' and let you enter your OS. Backup your work, then only try to fix the problem.

Thanks

Thanks for the reply.

I'll wait to see if anyone else has anymore suggestions before following your steps. However, I noticed you said to back up my work. How exactly do I do that since I can't log in??

Thanks for your help.

after you re-install , you should be able to login again. Immediately backup your work after that.

update

I have had someone look at my computer at my university and they believe it's a hardware problem so I will have to send it into the manufacturer. Thanks for all your help anyways.

Hi Leafs567,

If you have not sent your computer off yet, please download HijackThis. Make sure you install HijackThis to a permanent folder such as C:\HJT as it creates backups of what we will fix. Run the program, click the button at the top "Do a system scan and save a logfile". Save the log to a convenient place such as C:\HJT Notepad will open, copy and paste the entire log into your post. Do not fix anything yet, most of what's in the log is needed!

Thanks for your response. However, I have already got it fixed by the manufacturer. The reason I didnt include a hijackthis log is because I couldn't log in to my computer even. It kept rebooting at start up. Thanks for your help anyway.

What was the solution? Did they tell you what they found?

No they didn't really tell me much. I dunno anything about computers so I can't really tell u anything specific. They just used some cd at start up and cleaned up some stuff i think. They didn't seem too sure about the problem either, they just said "it was probably a virus".
