Hey, i recently registered because i noticed a lot of members of this site have a similar issue to what i have on my own personal PC. I'm a reasonably seasoned technician and i have done all the preliminary scans to rule out spyware/viruses/etc.
Scans Performed: Hijackthis - personally checked the log cwshredder webroot spysweeper(fully updated) spybot S&D(fully updated) ad-aware SE personal(fully updated) AVG 7.0(fully updated) Norton Corporate(fully updated) I thought this would suffice, but sadly, no improvements were made, so i figured what the hell, ill just do a system recovery. So i pop in my xp home SP1 CD, choose not to format the existing partition but to do the repair function, and i boot it up, set up all my drivers and ... no change... I even went through my system32 folder to rule out unrecognized spyware as i have done by hand myself for some time now and i noted no unusual objects. I read some threads on this site and found that i had the same problem as a person from this thread: http://forums.devshed.com/antivirus-protection-117/svchost-exe-100-cpu-usage-help-171692.html So, i did what he/she did, by disabling rip listener(and in my case SSDP and automatic updates had to be disabled as well) and amazingly, my CPU was freed up immensely, and there was much rejoicing. I saw my wireless have enough CPU resources to connect to my AP for the first time in days and as i went to open up internet explorer to marvel at the site of google being displayed on my bedroom monitor i noticed that for whatever reason i am not receiving any packets of any variety through any networking method, be it wireless or wired. Dialup backups failed as well, same problem, different media. Seeing this, i played with some of the services, and to no avail broke down and performed yet another system recovery on the PC. Same problem, no packets being received and all applications that try to open a specific port for listening are denied. This is the only remaining issue i have with my PC, and if anyone has any ideas, it would be most graciously appreciated. Do note, that not having internet connectivity, i have not provided a hijackthis log, and i can assure you that there is nothing out of the ordinary running, but if you require it, note such, and i will work some magic with my flash drive to obtain you a copy of the log. My PC is a conglomeration of parts, so without cracking it open, i can safely tell you that it consists of: P4 1.7 Ghz 512 MB Ram 120 GB Harddrive sony 8x dvd-rom lite-on cd-rw standard floppy drive(yes, i should die for still having one) Nvidia 128 MB PCI video card 10/100 PCI Ethernet NIC PCI Modem Linksys Wireless-B NIC integrated sound Thank you in advance, Akiji |

Hi akiji and welcome to Dev Shed.
Firstly, have you tried to uninstall all your wireless software and re-install ? Also try running WinSockFix as that may restore your connection for you. Let us know how you get on with these two.

My good sir, you are a gentleman and a scholar, and to you i am eternally endebted. As incompetant as i may sound, i have been working on this for almost a month now, and I ran the winsock fix and its back to its beautiful self, just like that. I hope this helps others who fix the 100% svchost.exe issue of their own but lack network connectivity, and i cant thank you enough. |
