CPU 100% / XP home hungs when shutting down
My computer has been screwing up recently, with the CPU usage constantly at 100%. The culprit process claims to be 'System', which is now using about 96%. Additionally (and I do not know if this is connected at all), my computer refuses to shutdown or restart. It hangs when it get to the Windows 'Your computer is shutting down' screen.
I have read lots of forums, and treid many things. I have: *installed and run Notron Antivirus after doing a 'Live Update' (nothing bad found) *run SpyBot Search and Destroy (a couple of Ad ware things found) *run BlasterFix (just in case...!) *started the computer in Safe Mode (CPU still at 100%) Still the CPU remains at 100%. So, I got really annoyed with it, so I backed up all my work, and did a System Restore from the CDs that I got with the PC when I bought it. Everything seemed to run during that, except at the end when it trys to restart, it hung (hanged?!?). And STILL my CPU is up at 100%!!! I have also reinstalled XP SP1 from CD, but STILL THE PROBLEM EXISTS!!!! Now, from my understanding, the System Restore was going to put the settings, files, etc back to how it was when I bought it... (and indeed reinstalling SP1 would too!!)... in that it didn't fix my problem, could it be that this is a hardware issue rather than corrupted files or virus issue? Any help on this would be very gratefully appreciated.... Many thanks. |

In such a case, clean installation is must and fastest. Once Trojans are excecuted, it can disable the functions of Antivirus.

Hi sturoy,
Download HijackThis (link below). Make sure you install HijackThis to a permanent folder such as C:\HJT as it creates backups of what we will fix. Run the program, press Scan, after a brief pause press Save log. Notepad will open, copy and paste the entire log into your post. Do not fix anything yet, most of what's in the log is needed! Tom |

There is no malware in your log.
Have you removed anything from the log before posting? Was the log created in normal mode (not safe mode)? Please reboot your computer, open HijackThis > click Config button > click Misc Tools button > click Generate Startuplist Log > click Yes Copy and paste the Startup list log with a fresh HijackThis log into your next post Tom |

Hey Tom, thanks for that...
I did run HijackThis in normal mode, but I will do it again with the instructions you've given. I am starting to think that this is more to do with some sort of hardware problem than a virus/malware? But then what do I know...! It may take a while for me to be able to get anything back up here... Really appreciate your help, Stu. |
