CPU usage 100%

Hi,
I have windows XP. I am having a problem with my computer. I have an HP. Many of my programs are not running due to my CPU usage being 100%. I have norton system works 2004 and all of the current virus updates. Also, my norton will no longer run. It will open and then within 5 seconds the box will close. I cannot run regedit or msconfig for long periods of time either. In my task manager it shows my CPU usage at 100% however, when I end some programs it remains at 100%. What can I do to fix this?
Thanks!

Try to understand the above knowledge base and its link. It is very hard to do. However there seem to be a lot of causes to be considered.

Whatever you think of might narrow down the causes.

Hey purpleskies2210,

Enable everything in MSCONFIG (if you have disabled anything). Go to Start > Run > msconfig > click Startup Tab > everything should have a checkmark to the left of it. Please note: this does not apply to Windows 2000 users.

Download HijackThis (link below). Make sure you install HijackThis to a permanent folder such as C:\HJT as it creates backups of what we will fix. Run the program, press Scan, after a brief pause press Save log. Notepad will open, copy and paste the entire log into your post. Do not fix anything yet, most of what's in the log is needed!

Tom

You might want to print these instructions.

Please move HijackThis into it's own folder such as C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe so it can make backups of what we fix. In case something goes wrong, we can depend on them being there.

You have a coolwebsearch infection, among other things. Please download CWShredder written by Merijn Bellekom from Here

Press "Check for Update" and download any new updates available.

Close ALL browser windows or it may not work! Unzip it to a convenient location such as your Desktop and select "Fix" (do not just Scan). It will automatically remove the infections.

Please read the information in this link to remove Gator:
http://www.pchell.com/support/gator.shtml

Hold down the Ctrl+Shift keys on your keyboard and tap the Esc key. This will open task manager. End the following processes by selecting it and pressing the End Process button and clicking Yes to the confirmation message: Note: not all of these will be running.

CMESys.exe
DDCMan.exe
DDCActiveMenu.exe
s5ssx96le9.exe
lsas.exe
DateManager.exe
GMT.exe
BackWeb-137903.exe

Logoff your internet connection. Close all browsers and other windows except HijackThis.
Run HijackThis, place a checkmark next to the following items. Click "fix checked".

Reboot normally.

You are way behind on Windows Updates. This leaves your computer open to many threats. Please Update Windows and Internet Explorer. Download each critical update one by one, rebooting when necessary.. Repeat this until you get the message "no critical updates available" http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

Post a fresh HijackThis log.

The reason I am behind on updates is because i will download them and it says they have been installed. However, the next day it will ask me to download the same exact updates. Any help you can give me on this? Thanks!

You may want to try Windows Update Troubleshooter:
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot

First, let's address this problem:

O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [COM+ System Applications] lsas.exe
This entry came back. It is described as "Added as a result of an unidentified VIRUS!" in Paul Collins (Pacman's) Startup list.

Let's do an online scan at one of these sites:

Trend Micro Housecall
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Panda Active Scan
www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/activescan

Bitdefender
http://www.bitdefender.com/scan/licence.php

Also, I don't see an antivirus program running on your computer. If you need one AVG has a free version:
www.grisoft.com

Post a fresh hijackthis log with your results.

Tom

Hi, I put Norton System Works back on my machine. For some reason it wasn't running properly. I found two viruses and deleted them. Here is my new hijack this log. What should I do next?

You computer is clean! Good work!

I would spend some time getting your windows updates to work. They are your first line of defence. Start with the Windows Update Troubleshooter, you might want to search google. Post back here if you can't get updated.

These are tools that will help heep you from getting infected again:

SpywareBlaster will block bad ActiveX and malevolent cookies. http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

SpywareGuard is a real-time spyware scanner.
http://www.wilderssecurity.net/spywareguard.html

IE-SPYAD puts over 4000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
http://www.staff.uiuc.edu/~ehowes/resource.htm#IESPYAD

All are very small free programs. Occasionally check for updates.

Adjust your security settings for ActiveX:
Go to Internet Options/Security/Internet, press 'default level', then OK.
Now press "Custom Level."
In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to 'prompt', and 'Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe" to 'disable'.

Check for updates for Windows and Internet Explorer every week or so. Download each critical update one by one, rebooting when necessary.. Repeat this until you get the message "no critical updates available"
