post a new hijackthis log.. lets see if you still got a mess on your system. for information on how to prevent this: well a good place to start would be this forum. read through some of the threads.
to help protect your system, you'll need a good firewall. check out zone alarm (links in the stick at the top of the forum). also switch your browser to firefox. its much more resistant to spyware/adware. get the latest patches and update (maybe even sp2 but be warned it may make things worse) for your xp box. the combo of zone alarm, hijackthis, adaware and spybot & firefox should be enough to keep your comp clean. if you can .. do a complete format & re-install of windows xp, and then setup zone alarm and adaware and hijackthis and spybot, update your system, and never use IE again (firefox rulez). ...and all should be good ![]() cheers ![]()

I would call TrendMicro up and tell them to give you a XP Install CD, or get instruction on how to burn one off your recovery partition.
The key to installing SP2 without a hitch is to meake sure you have turned off all firewall and AV programs running before starting the SP2 executable. I prefer downloading the entire SP2 file from the Administrator's side and running it off-line. You are using McAfee firewall, Kaspersky AV, so you can kill these items: O16 - DPF: {1F2F4C9E-6F09-47BC-970D-3C54734667FE} (LSSupCtl Class) - https://www-secure.symantec.com/techsupp/asa/LSSupCtl.cab O16 - DPF: {CE28D5D2-60CF-4C7D-9FE8-0F47A3308078} (ActiveDataInfo Class) - https://www-secure.symantec.com/techsupp/asa/SymAData.cab I'd uninstall the Microsoft antispyware, as well... it's nice if it finds anything, but it caused a few compatibility issues over the four hours I had it on the computer. Are you currently using AOL high-speed? If not, then get rid of all the AOL crap. Same thing with MSN Messenger-- if you aren't using it, try losing it. I agree with onMSBi... you really need to build this computer up fromscratch... things will run a lot smoother, I think, with a fresh install. |

I disagree with reinstalling windows. Most all infections can be cleared up with HijackThis and various other tools. About the only case for reinstalling is for Hacker Defender or a corrupt windows installation!
WelshBluebird, Please post a fresh HijackThis log. Tom

its true what you say, tomMyboy, but sometimes you have to factor in the time it takes to clean up a heavilty infected system. Especially if you are being guided over the internet, as we do here in this forum.. Absolutely right that a re-insatll is a last resort, but in some cases it just makes more sense, to back up all personal files to a different partition, and format and re-install windows. and then take the necessary precautions from there on. it will be a lot less time consuming. besides even hijackthis is not 100% effective.
.. just my 2 cents ![]() |

Well, I guess we all have our own opinion. I still disagree. It may be a timesaver in the begining, but what are people to do, reinstall or reimage windows every month?
HijackThis and the tools that the experts develop are meant to keep a computer clean without reinstalling. It goes without saying that too many computers ship without a reinstallation cd and when the recovery partion becomes corrupt you're up a creek ![]() If users stop by for a checkup every so often, it's a breeze Too many people wait until they can hardly use their machine, then post a log! Then I agree, it's a big job to get them cleaned up.What it all comes down to is a lot of people are not interested in prevention, that's the key here. Get the machine cleaned up and install some preventive tools, get your windows updates, update and scan with your antivirus, install a firewall! When I finish cleaning up someone's machine, I post a list of tools that will help keep them clean. That and a little common sence regaring what you do and where you go on the internet is all the difference in the world ![]() *steps off his soap box* Tom |

I can understand that, but what would be better, having a bunch of lusers depending on you to diagnose and troubleshoot their every issue by remote control, or force them to undergo the agony of a format and reinstall, motivating them to learn how to protect and maintain their system in order to avoid having to do that again? |
