Deleting adware

One of my friends was scanning his comp with NAV 2004 and it came across with two adware files. He went to delete, but NAV, like it likes to do, decided to fail to delete it. I figured it was most likely because there was a process running that was using the files, but I did not know which process to end before deleting. He restarted his comp and tried to delete it again, but to no avail.

So, I guess my question is what is the next step??

come up in safe mode and try manually deleteing them or download adaware [free] spyware checker and it will delete them

Have your friend post a HijackThis log.

Download HijackThis (link below). Make sure you install HijackThis to a permanent folder such as C:\HJT as it creates backups of what we will fix. Run the program, press Scan, after a brief pause press Save log. Notepad will open, copy and paste the entire log into your post. Do not fix anything yet, most of what's in the log is needed!

If your friend doesn't have access to the internet, just copy HijackThis to a floppy. You can save the log to that same floppy and post it here.

he has a connection. WLAN here at the school and DSL at home. I won't see him for a few hours till class though. That will be a good class project (as we never pay any attention in class anyways).

You might want to print these instructions for reference, as you will be off the internet while using HijackThis.

Go to Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel, choose the 'NavHelper' and click 'Remove'. Please do the same for Ares.

SpywareBeGone (spywarebegone.com\freespywarescan.org) is known to be bogus software. It is recommended that you uninstall it and use Adaware and Spybot Search and Destroy instead.

Some versions of BearShare are known to install spyware. There are safer alternatives.

Then....

Logoff your internet connection. Run HijackThis, click scan, place a checkmark next to the following items. Close all browsers and any other windows or the fix may not work! Click "fix checked". It is OK if some of these items are no longer listed.

Boot into Safe Mode. Reboot your computer, start tapping F8 when it first starts booting, select Safe Mode.

Make sure your computer is configured to show all files and folders.
Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden Files and Folders heading select Show Hidden Files and Folders.
Uncheck the Hide Protected Operating System Files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

Delete the following folders:

C:\Program Files\Ares

Reboot normally and post a fresh hijackthis log.
