desktop hijacked - help!
This is driving me nuts. My desktop is hijacked to show a reference to a site promoting "SmartSecurity" anti-spyware software (right!) and I think I've got 180 search as well. I've run Adaware, Spybot and Norton and can't fix it - can anybody help? Here's the HT log:

Hi bptex,
Please update HijackThis, you are using an outdated version: Open HijackThis, click Config > Misc Tools > Check for Update online Or download a copy of version 1.98.2 at: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html Please move or unzip HijackThis to a permanent folder such as C:\HJT It is important that it is in it's own folder as it will make important backups of what we will fix. Please go to Start > My Computer > double-click your C:\ drive > click: File > New > Folder > name it HJT and put HijackThis into that folder. Post a fresh log with this new version. Tom

Here you go. It's getting worse - I'm getting frequent random pop-ups now and spybot is going off every two seconds with a registry change warning.

Stinger came up clean. Housecall had three java files which I deleted. The remaining probelm is my desktop background, which was previously hijacked to refer to some website (instead of a photo of my son) is now stuck blank. I did find a file in my desktop background menu called internet.html, which I deleted. That got rid of the hijacker reference, but replaced it with a blank view. I can't get the photo to call up. Any idea?

Bryan,
Your HijackThis log is clean, good job! Please right-click an open area of your desktop and select properties. Click the Desktop tab > click the Customize Destop button > click the Web tab > under Web pages: uncheck "SmartSecurity" > click OK. You should then be able to reset your background normally. Let me know if that does the trick. Tom |

It's great to hear your computer is running better!!!
Because you were infected, backups of the malware may be in System Restore. 1 Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties. 2 Click the System Restore tab. 3 Check the "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives" check box. 4 Click Apply 5 this will delete all existing restore points.
