Does Anti Virus Work?

I seem to get infected with malware or viruses just as often if I have anti virus software installed or not.

I just was infected with a malware and had to have my computer disc wiped. The malware or whatever it was disabled my Norton and slapped me.

I have had no anti virus in the past and seemed to be able to go for years without a problem.

Does anybody else have that problem too? I think it could be a waste of money, but in saying that I don't take chances like I have in the past.

It sounds to me like you need to review your internet habits if you get as many infections as you say. Or you never really wiped some rootkit that's hiding on your machine and there is an open channel to get re-infected.

I use NOD32 which will detect most viruses, but no AV is perfect. If you get a day-zero virus it was not your lucky day.

I do believe anyone who uses the public internet with a windows computer without an antivirus is a "bad netizen", one whose computer will shortly become a member of a botnet or some other evil that makes the internet less useful and more dangerous for the rest of us.

They work but what is most important is your browsing habits.
Also, AVs are mostly an after-the-fact solutions. That is, trying to catch what is known.
