Explorer suddenly restarts.

hi,
when i am working, my explorer suddenly restarts. it is as if it got "overloaded with work" kind of a thing.
normally this happens when i try to open some file(i normally work with .txt's).
on oneMSBi's suggestion, i ran hijackthis. here is the log

hello busmaster. i checked over your log and i cant find anything amiss. maybe TomMyboy will spot something i did not. post this problem over at the windows forum, and let the best guys there see if they can help you out. [dont post the log there, just the problem details]

the only possible bad entry i could see was this:
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - (no file)
but i dont thinks its anything too bad.

Hi busmaster,

This line in your log:

O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - (no file)

Is related to Sun Java and appears to have a problem. Do you know if MSJava has been properly removed before installing the Sun Java?

Also...

You are running without Windows Updates. It's kind of like running with scissors

Tom

the 3rd line of the log indicate you do not have any updates installed.

i dont think you need to re-install windows for now. I would suggest you un-install both Sun's java and MS java, completely first. then just re-install the sun java. see if the problem persists from then on.

Quote:
The Microsoft Java Virtual Machine (MS Java VM) handles Java applets on web pages, compiling and executing them.
Currently Microsoft no longer supports the MS Java VM, and preinstalled machines with Windows XP and Service Pack 1a (SP1a) come without it. Older machines still have the MS Java VM.

The Sun Microsystems Java VM is a replacement for the now obsolete MS Java VM. Instructions on replacing the MS Java VM with the Sun Java VM are as follows:

1. Click Start, Run and enter:

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection java.inf,UnInstall

2. Click Yes to confirm the uninstall, and restart your system when it's complete.

3. Delete the following if they are still present:
* The folder c:\windows\java
* c:\windows\inf\java.pnf
* c:\windows\system32\jview.exe
* c:\windows\system32\wjview.exe

4. Click Start, Run and enter regedit to start the Registry Editor.
5. Browse to the following keys, highlight and delete them:
* HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Java VM
* HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\AdvancedOptions\JAVA_VM

* For Windows NT4 and Windows 2000, replace c:\windows with c:\winnt.
* For Windows 95, 98, 98SE and ME, replace c:\windows\system32 with c:\windows\system.

You can now download the Sun Java VM from here:
