This log is clean except for one item:
You have PowerReg Scheduler in your log. This is a registration reminder that is used by a number of different companies. It is not needed and some people think that it reports back to the company about your computer, so I suggest fixing it... O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler.exe Please include the headers in future logs: Logfile of HijackThis v1.98.2 Scan saved at 12:06:35 AM, on 10/16/2004 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180) On to the next user....

Tom,
Below is Next User "E" - there are a couple more to follow. A few questions for you... Do these Hijack this logs have any information that a hacker would find useful? Have you seen any evidence yet in these logs of the downloads you asked me to install? Finally one for you to ponder, one of the key problems that has occurred is that after I completed all of the cleaning processes and downloads, my installation process (from CD:ROM) appears to have been corrupted. Here is log E. Appreciatively, Glassman Logfile of HijackThis v1.98.2 Scan saved at 5:58:04 AM, on 10/26/2004 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00. Clean log... Nexxxxt!
Do these Hijack this logs have any information that a hacker would find useful? Not to my knowledge. Hackers have their own tools to break into computers. Have you seen any evidence yet in these logs of the downloads you asked me to install? No I don't. In your final (original) log in post: http://forums.devshed.com/showpost.php?p=841552&postcount=11 I dont see any of them running. I would like you to give something a try. Download PepiMK's CoolWWWSearch.SmartKiller removal tool first and run it on the original account you first posted a log with.. There are usually more symptoms (HJT and CWShedder won't run, etc.) but I'd like to check it out. http://www.safer-networking.org/files/delcwssk.zip Finally one for you to ponder, one of the key problems that has occurred is that after I completed all of the cleaning processes and downloads, my installation process (from CD:ROM) appears to have been corrupted. Right-click My Computer > Manage > Device Manager > right-click the CDRom in question and select uninstall. Reboot your computer and Windows will reinstall it. Tom |

How's things running now? No more 100% CPU usage? I see no more malware in your logs!!!
You may want to install the following tools in to each user's account to stay clean and purge System Restore... Because you were infected, backups of the malware may be in System Restore. 1 Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties. 2 Click the System Restore tab. 3 Check the "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives" check box. 4 Click Apply 5 this will delete all existing restore points. Click Yes to do this. 6 Click OK. Reboot 1 Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties. 2 Click the System Restore tab. 3 Uncheck the "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives" check box. 4 Click Apply 5 Click OK. Create a new Restore Point: Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore > tick Create a Restore Point > Next > enter a name for the Restore Point Creation (Today, Removed Spyware, etc.) > Create > Close. The date and time will automatically be added. Then.... These are tools that will help keep you from getting infected again: SpywareBlaster prevents the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests. Blocks spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox. Restricts the actions of potentially dangerous sites in InternetExplorer. http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html SpywareGuard provides a real-time protection solution against spyware that is a great addition to SpywareBlaster's protection method. http://www.wilderssecurity.net/spywareguard.html IE-SPYAD puts over 4000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all. http://www.staff.uiuc.edu/~ehowes/resource.htm#IESPYAD MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm All are very small free programs. Occasionally check for updates. Check for updates for Windows and Internet Explorer every week or so. Download each critical update one by one, rebooting when necessary.. Repeat this until you get the message "no critical updates available" http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ Please take a minute to read: So how did I get infected in the first place? http://forums.net-integration.net/i...?showtopic=3051 Tom |

Question
Tom,
Dumb question perhaps but here goes... Can I load and run programs like Adaware, Spybot, SpyWareBlaster, SpywareGuard MVPS Hosts all from Administrator account - and expect them to clean and protect all users - or do they have to be run from each user account? If the latter, then I am inclined to reduce the number of users - this is a lot of work! Glassman |

I would install them all to the admin account and see which ones turn up running in the other accounts. It will be interesting to know out what you find out. Just run HJT or check Task Manager to see.
