Help remove aboutblank

Hey Tom,

sorry to bother you again, but can you tell me once more if my log is ok? I also saw this one web site where it say in order to remove aboutblank, you had to look at the Registry and detele some stuff. Here is the website: http://assiste.free.fr/p/internet_attaquants/coolwebsearch.php#aboutblank

can you tell me if that is right also? Plus I'm also having problem when I try to update window...for some reason It won't let me do that. Thank again for all your help,

Deco9999

p.s you know how you told me to put highjack this into a folder and name it hjt...well I did that, but hjt is in the hjt folder and it is also still in the c drive as well. So there is one in the folder and one that remain in the c drive.

You can delete the the file c:\hijackthis.exe

Please use the file c:\hjt\hijackthis.exe when working with your logs.

You only need one.

Well on their website they do describe CWS.Searchx as follows:

Variant 38: CWS.Searchx - about:blank seems popular lately
Approx date first sighted: April 6, 2004
Log reference: http://forums.techguy.org/t217853.html
Symptoms: IE pages changed to about:blank (which is changed to a search portal linking to searchx.cc) and a search page inside a DLL on the system, hijack returning on system reboot
Cleverness: 8/10
Manual removal difficulty: Involves lots of Registry editing
Identifying lines in HijackThis log:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\gfmnaaa.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\gfmnaaa.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res:// C:\WINDOWS\System32\gfmnaaa.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,HomeOldSP = about:blank
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {48918FB4-1FD5-4DF3-87F0- 12C36350039D} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\gfmnaaa.dll

Please note the R1 and 02 entries hilighted in bold. This is what we see in a log that is infected with Searchx. Your log does not show these entries. Have you ever had any entries like those shown in bold? If so, are you removing them yourself?

Hey Tom,

thanks for the reply, anyway the only time I actually remove anything was when you help me out last time. I'm still not sure how i'm going to get rid of this aboutblank...it keeps changing my web page. I'll try and look at the window troubleshooting later today. Thank again,

deco9999

Your log is clean!

You are behind on Windows Updates. This leaves your computer open to many threats. You will just get infected again if you don't install these! Please update Windows and Internet Explorer. Download each critical update one by one, rebooting when necessary.. Repeat this until you get the message "no critical updates available". http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

These are tools that will help keep you from getting infected again:

SpywareBlaster will block bad ActiveX and malevolent cookies. http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

SpywareGuard is a real-time spyware scanner.
http://www.wilderssecurity.net/spywareguard.html

IE-SPYAD puts over 4000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
http://www.staff.uiuc.edu/~ehowes/resource.htm#IESPYAD

All are very small free programs. Occasionally check for updates.

Check for updates for Windows and Internet Explorer every week or so. Download each critical update one by one, rebooting when necessary.. Repeat this until you get the message "no critical updates available" http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

Please take a minute to read: So how did I get infected in the first place?

No, Spywareblaster runs in the background all the time. The only time you need to run the program is to check for updates weekly.

Nice working with you,

Tom
