searchx, about:blank keeps occuring
hi,
i was wondering if anyone can help me get rid of searchx...even after using CW, the searchx would still appear.
can anybody please tell me if there is problem with my log?here is my log, thanks!!!

You might want to print these instructions.

I see HijackThis is running from the root of your C:\ drive.. Please open My Computer > double-click your C:\ drive > File > New > Folder > name it HJT and put the program (HijackThis) into that folder.

Logoff your internet connection. Please press Ctrl-Alt-Delete and open Task Manager. End the following process by selecting it and pressing the End Process button and clicking Yes to the confirmation message:

msbb.exe

Run HijackThis, close all browsers and any other windows, place a checkmark next to the following items. Click "fix checked".

Boot into Safe Mode. Reboot your computer, start tapping F8 when it first starts booting, select Safe Mode.

Show hidden files:
How to Show hidden files and folders.

Delete the following folders:

C:\Program Files\MyWay\
c:\program files\search-assistant\

Open My Computer, browse to C:\documents and settings\User Name(repeat for all users)\local settings\temp folder and delete all files and folders in it.

Open My Computer, browse to C:\Windows\Temp folder and delete all files and folders in it.

Internet Explorer click Tools > Internet Options > General. Click "Delete Files",also check "delete all offline content" Click OK.

Empty your Recycle Bin.

Reboot normally and post a fresh log.

You are way behind on Windows Updates. This leaves your computer open to many threats. You will just get infected again if you don't install these! Please update Windows and Internet Explorer. Download each critical update one by one, rebooting when necessary.. Repeat this until you get the message "no critical updates available". http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

These are tools that will help keep you from getting infected again:

SpywareBlaster will block bad ActiveX and malevolent cookies. http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

SpywareGuard is a real-time spyware scanner.
http://www.wilderssecurity.net/spywareguard.html

IE-SPYAD puts over 4000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.

All are very small free programs. Occasionally check for updates.

Adjust your security settings for ActiveX:
Go to Internet Options/Security/Internet, press 'default level', then OK.
Now press "Custom Level."
In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to 'prompt', and 'Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe" to 'disable'.

Hi again Deco9999!

I see no reference to searchx in your log.

Please update HijackThis, you are using an outdated version:

Open HijackThis, click Config > Misc Tools > Check for Update online

Or download a copy of version 1.98 at:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html

Make sure you create a new folder for it and unzip it to that folder. C:\HJT or C:\Program Files\HijackThis are good places for it.

Open Internet Explorer and browse to a few places, this may help uncover the infection, if it's there.

Post a fresh log with this new version.

new log
Hi Tom,

here is the new log...I got the latest version of Hijack this, it's V1.97. the computer would be find for one min...then when I turn it on again, my start up page for internet explorer would set to searchx , about:blank. I also forgot...when I was using Highjack this, I open it and I went to where it said config...then on where it showed default start page: I put msn, (before on where it showed default start page: it had about:blank typed there, but now I changed it to msn). I'm still not sure if that was the problem though? and the stuff that you told me to delete before...I have deleted them, but I haven't empty it from the recycle bin...all the deleted stuff is still there, because I was afraid I might have deleted the wrong thing, so I left there, just in case. So should I have empty it out by now? Anyway thanks again for all your help Tom.

I don't really think you're infected with searchx. At least it doesn't show up in your log.

I see HijackThis is still running from the root of your C:\ drive.. (C:\HijackThis.exe) Please open My Computer > double-click your C:\ drive > File > New > Folder > name it HJT and put the program (HijackThis) into that folder. It will end up looking like C:\HJT\HijackThis

Run HijackThis, close all browsers and any other windows, place a checkmark next to the following items. Click "fix checked".

It is OK to empty your Recycle Bin.

You are way behind on Windows Updates. This leaves your computer open to many threats. You will just get infected again if you don't install these! Please update Windows and Internet Explorer. Download each critical update one by one, rebooting when necessary.. Repeat this until you get the message "no critical updates available". http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

Reboot normally and post a fresh log.

some of the stuff for win won't let me update for some reason...I don't know. Anyway thank you so much for all your help, I'll probably going to reinstall everything on my computer again later this month, so it doesn't matter. Thanks again Tom, take care
