Hi mcgusto,

You might want to print these instructions.

Please move or unzip HijackThis to a permanent folder such as C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe It is important that it is in it's own folder as it will make important backups of what we will fix.

You have a coolwebsearch infection, among other things. Please download CWShredder written by Merijn Bellekom from Here

Press "Check for Update" and download any new updates available.

Close ALL browser windows or it may not work! Unzip it to a convenient location such as your Desktop and select "Fix" (do not just Scan). It will automatically remove the infections.

Logoff your internet connection. Please press Ctrl-Alt-Delete and open Task Manager. End the following process by selecting it and pressing the End Process button and clicking Yes to the confirmation message:

msrexe.exe
winlgn.exe

Close all browsers and other windows except HijackThis. Run HijackThis, place a checkmark next to the following items. Click "fix checked". Note: CWShredder may have already deleted some of these.

Delete the following files:

Just a quick question. You said that it was OK to fix O4 - Global Startup ...microsoft office..\OSA9.exe as it was a resource hog. Is it OK for me to do the same on another machine in order improve its performance?

Thanks again

Yes, it is fine to fix in another machine. Here's a description of OSA9.exe from Pac's Startup list:

Resource hog that launches common MS Office components to help speed up the launch of Office programs. Some users claim there's no difference with or without it but it isn't required anyway. Different filenames used for different variants

In your latest log:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSConfig] C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\msconfig.exe /auto

Tells me you may have startup items disabled. It's a good idea to check and see if you have any malware disabled this way. If you do, it might be a good idea to check all items (Start > Run > msconfig > click the startup tab > check all items > reboot) and post a fresh log.

These are tools that will help heep you from getting infected again:

SpywareBlaster will block bad ActiveX and malevolent cookies. http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

SpywareGuard is a real-time spyware scanner.
http://www.wilderssecurity.net/spywareguard.html

IE-SPYAD puts over 4000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
http://www.staff.uiuc.edu/~ehowes/resource.htm#IESPYAD

All are very small free programs. Occasionally check for updates.

Adjust your security settings for ActiveX:
Go to Internet Options/Security/Internet, press 'default level', then OK.
Now press "Custom Level."
In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to 'prompt', and 'Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe" to 'disable'.

Check for updates for Windows and Internet Explorer every week or so. Download each critical update one by one, rebooting when necessary.. Repeat this until you get the message "no critical updates available" http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

Tom
