Exclamation Homepage Hijacked twice Please Help!

Hi. I'm a newbie. My boss has set me to the task of retrieving his homepage which has been hijacked twice. I downloaded CWShredder and ran it. It worked for about two weeks, but now his homepage is set to about:blank but the window is not blank. There is a strange search engine showing. I have downloaded Hijack this and Ad-Aware but I do not want to go forward with anything until I get some help. Please...Any advice? Thanks...

Hi minxsanders,

I am working on your log. This is a new CWS infection and the experts are currently working on fixes. I have one for XP. I am going to check and see whats available for Windows 2000.

Please be patient,
Tom

Download Spywareblaster (link below) for added protection. Install it and check for updates, Enable all protection.

Here's a registry fix that seems to have been working.

Reg fix:

Copy the text inside the quote box to Notepad, and save in a location of your choice as remove.reg (make sure you save as type: 'all files')

Doubleclick Remove.reg, and answer yes when prompted to add its contents to the Registry.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\PROTOCOLS\Filter\text/html]
[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\PROTOCOLS\Filter\text/plain]
/QUOTE

Restart your computer, go to the link in my signature (below), and download the latest version of CWShredder. Click check for update first. Install the update and run it, press 'Fix', and allow it to fix all it finds.

Next, run Hijack This once more, repost to this forum thread, and please show us a fresh log.

Tom

cwshredder

We've downloaded the new version of CWShredder and run it, but we fear that the bug might come back again. For now, the system seems to be clear, but are there any more preventative measures to take?

If you look at the sticky topic at the top of this forum you will find a link for a free firewall, download that and it can block cookies, pop-ups and other things.

I believe this program will help prevent further infections. Another thing that might help is to stay away from bad sites. Porn sites are generally the source of these hijacking trojans/programs. There might be other sources that I do not know of.

Did you download a trojan scanning program? Those help.
