it's a problem and i can't figure it out. i have apache 2 running on windows 98SE. it works great. my apache-side mime type for html is still text/html or whatever the default was. firefox can connect to the server no problem, using my ip or reverse dns address. when you try to connect to it with ie, all you see are some kind of proxy settings related to scotiabank or something. i have never been to scotiabank.com and it is not a virus. i think i once found a file with those same settings in it somewhere, but can't find it now and its still the same thing. any ideas? my email thingy is turned on for this thread.

Sounds like you have spyware.
As it turns out until I setup automatic scanning on my works network for spyware, 70% of users problems stemmed from spyware. I reccomend Ad Aware - Which is the best. Next I would try reinstalling IE, and running windows updates. Last but not least just use firefox and dump IE. ----------- I reccomend going to a web cafe and trying to connect via IE, it sounds like its just your computer.

Hi ffoeg.tk,
Please download HijackThis. Make sure you install HijackThis to a permanent folder such as C:\HJT as it creates backups of what we will fix. Run the program, click the button at the top "Do a system scan and save a logfile". Save the log to a convenient place such as C:\HJT Notepad will open, copy and paste the entire log into your post. Do not fix anything yet, most of what's in the log is needed! http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html Tom

no it aint like that
what i mean is i am running the server. others who are using ie can't connect. good god like i would run iexplore on myself. my uptime is 99% and i'd like to keep it that way haha. it's when other people are connecting that it's not working. mostly it seems to. my processes are apache and explorer. period. i run firefox and all that, but i was wondering maybe a way to bypass my isp's routers or something? firefox users can chew their way into it no prob, but #1, when i use my reverse dns lookup as a url, ie won't load it at all. #2 when i use my ip, sometimes ie users can get in, sometimes not. if anyone's ever done it, let me know how or just drop some good phrases for me to google ok?

ps (i have systray too)
i built the os from scratch and installed everything myself, scanned with norton, spybot, etc, took out all background tasks i don't use. etc. if a virus got in there, it would probably just crash anyway. it's about the networking that i am a noob.

you say you have a prblem with IE correct ? then please do as TOm suggested and well take a look at your log, and see if there have been any entries added to your registry to cause IE to behave that way. Besides there are ways for virii to run on your system undetected. Usually norton or spybot will throw warning but there are those few exceptionsthat escaped unnoticed. if you still feel this is not a virus or hijacking problem please post and let me know and i will shift this thread either to the windows forum or the networking forum (whichever you would prefer).
