Norton Antivirus comes to mind

You can run the norton online virus scanner that will identify the viruses you have, and follow their instruction on manual removal for each if you don't want to buy a copy.

Definately....

And, personally, I've found that switching to Linux always helps....

I would love to know how you managed to get that many viruses.

Do not open attachments unless you know who the email is from. Only use Outlook after you have applied ALL security patches, updates, etc to make sure that it is half secure.

If you know what viruses you have there are removal tools you can download or do as Ctb suggested and get Nortons.

Upgrading to Linux is a good idea but is not practical for some people. I still am not happy enough to run Linux as my primary desktop environment. It is still too painful to use as that. I run a server at home but prefer to run FreeBSD

That's not many viruses at all. My wife told me that her friend took her computer in for a tune-up and found out there were 14 viruses on it. They removed them, but within a week they had 12.

Her son, I guess, downloads games, etc. off the web.

Personally, I prefer Linux over Windows for web browsing and software development. I like the tools a lot more. I currently boot up in Knoppix since I'm at work and can't install it, but if it was my machine, I'd do a dual boot. (My home machine's a Mac, so I don't need to worry about that)

Windows is easy to protect. Just never let it on the Internet and never load any new software on it and never turn it on and never touch and never LOOK AT IT. What's the problem with you people?

Oh.... wait....

Well you need to see that when a lot of the code in Windows was developed there was no internet and so security wasnt that much of an issue. Well that at least explains 98/ME, doesn't really help XP

I had to do this for a neighbor last week. She had a couple virus and some backdoor/trojan type programs. I found some "temp" files that were logging everything we were typing. I showed her where she had logged in to hotmail and it listed her username and password right in the file.

I tried AVG and it missed some of the viruses that Norton (got that later from work) picked up, so I can't say that I was that impressed.

I installed ZoneAlarm and as soon as it started up over 40 different attempts to access her computer were blocked within the first 30 seconds. Then, as Norton cleaned up the keylogger programs, they tried to access the internet. It seemed like a last cry of the program trying to call home. Kind of funny now that it's all clean.

I don't really fault users. There's way to much crap to keep up with to keep a Windows box secure. She had around 28 different critical updates to download and install... she's probably still doing it.

Fun times.

I take a slightly different route. I run windows on Virtual PC. I have a backup of the HD image with a fresh install, which I replace on my HD if something goes bad. It's kind of cool being able to reinstall windows in the time it takes to copy a 300Meg file from CD. But it's getting pretty rare that I find software for the PC that I want to take the time to try out. And my MacAddict magazine is pretty much my only source of junk software for my Mac, and I trust them to scan for viruses first.

Rmm? Pardon? Win95 came out in August of '95 so not only was there a relatively mature Internet, there was a burgeoning WWW. Even considering the first Win32 API, WinNT was released mid '93.

There most certainly was an Internet. Microsoft, in typical fashion, just underestimated it and had to play catch up.
