Hi jsKid, Yes, I know a bit about java based virus. How about posting a HijackThis log and explaining a bit further about your problem. I do not care to follow the link you posted, do you know much about virus embedded images? Seriously, if you're infected it's best to play it safe!Tom

ByteVerify exploits...
You are referring to .jar files, LOL. Some of them attack the MS Virtual Machine. In a fully patched system with JRE updated and MS Virtual machine disabled, you should be safe from them. In explorer, go to "Tools>Folder Settings" and click on "show hidden files". You will then be able to navigate the path below...C:\Documents and Settings\USER\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\javapi\v1.0\jar just delete these files in \jar, but leave the \jar folder. You can also go to "Control Panel>Java" and clean your cache there. Depending on where you have been surfing , you will pick up quite a few files, for example when doing a speed test at dslreports.com, you'll be loading a java applet, and files will go in that cache, so not all files there are bad If you have been infected, google for some help, using the filename you suspect, or wait for some help here. |

okay... I cleared the Java cache...
I know that Java has it's uses, but is it *generally* safe to have ?? I don't think that I would get anymore viruses from Java than I would not having Java, right? and downloaded HijackThis .. just in case.. Code:

I have a fix almost done for you, but I would like you to perform an online virus scan first:
I would like you to perform an onlne virus scan at Trend Micro http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ Select all of your drives for scanning. Please check "Auto clean" before scanning. If you can, copy and paste the report logs from the scan into your next post along with a fresh HijackThis log, or write down what the results were and post it with a fresh HijackThis log. Tom |

Java...
jsKid,
Java, not to be confused with java-script, has a lot of uses and is not bad, but as with all software, there are people out there that just don't play by the rules. So, knowledge is your best defense. Java can be disabled in IE by going to "Tools>InternetOptions>Advanced" , scrolling down to Java and unchecking the box next to "Use JRE 'version number' for". If you have MS Virtual machine, uncheck that. It may not even be installed. The old version for Java Runtime Environment (JRE) is 1.4.2 and you should upgrade to 1.5.0_02. Download that version, go to "Control Panel>Add Remove Programs" and uninstall the old version first, then install JRE 1.5.0_02. I use the Firefox browser as well, the latest version is 1.0.2. It is easy to use, has nice features, and you can disable Java quite easily there as well, by going to "Tools>Options>Web Features" and unchecking the box next to Java. Another good anti spyware app is 'SpywareBlaster'. You download and update it, run it, and it blocks lots of nasty ActiveX items. As far as 'SpybotSearch'nDestroy' is concerned, you may want to open it in advanced mode, go to "Tools>Settings" and click on the 'Ignore Products' icon. The 'All Items' tab should be open. Scroll through the entire list, and make sure that all items are un-checked. By default, there are a few items that are checked when you first install this app. I believe there are about 4 items that are checked. Don't ask me why... For those more interested: www.sysinternals.com is another great site with wonderful utilities for Windows, many of them free. My 3 favourites are 'Process Explorer' (much like taskmanager, but better), 'Autoruns', and last but not least, 'RootkitRevealer'. These utilities have a small footprint, and don't even need to be installed. You DL them, put them in a directory like "Utilities", right click on them and 'pin them to the start menu'. When you want run one of them, just click on the shortcut in the start menu, and voila, a happy camper. Last edited by Zigzagcom : March 28th, 2005 at 01:10 PM. Reason: more info... |

Quote:
I agree with you here.. though I am skepticaly whether or not to keep Java enabled all the time. - Javascript is web based scripting.. and Java is more like applets and the such. Quote:
definitely for good measure... being able to toggle Java/Javascript etc etc on and off.. Quote:
I agree Firefox is a much better browser than IE, as well as better in many of its features, like the JS Console for instance.. Quote:
Had it on an old CPU.. very good program.. will probably download again.. Quote:
Did that as soon as I installed it.. Quote:
I've heard of them, now reaffirming their effectiveness I may look into the site. thanks for all help so far. ![]() |
