Hi bobsnow25,

You have a coolwebsearch infection, among other things. Please download CWShredder written by Merijn Bellekom from Here

Press "Check for Update" and download any new updates available.

Close ALL browser windows or it may not work! Unzip it to a convenient location such as your Desktop and select "Fix" (do not just Scan). It will automatically remove the infections.

Reboot and post a new log.

Tom

Feel welcome to post an updated HijackThis log as a final check. There may be more malware we could possibly remove.

CWShredder was supposed to be updated to remove this infection. However, there is a specific removal tool for this.

Could you reboot your computer and post a new log? I am looking for those entries like:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = file://C:\DOCUME~1\Robert\LOCALS~1\Temp\sp.html

Tom

I checked highjackthis for updates and it told me servers were busy or something to that effect.

Thanks goes to Freeatlast for the fix!

Please download "FINDnFIX.exe". Run the "!LOG!.bat" file and post the results into this message for further review.

Yes! I just noticed that... It must have been pulled for some reason. So here's the original fix. Seems to work most of the time:

Please follow these instructions carefully!

Download and install APM from: http://www.diamondcs.com.au/index.php?page=apm

Close all windows except HijackThis and fix these lines.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = file://C:\DOCUME~1\Robert\LOCALS~1\Temp\sp.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = file://C:\DOCUME~1\Robert\LOCALS~1\Temp\sp.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = file://C:\DOCUME~1\Robert\LOCALS~1\Temp\sp.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = file://C:\DOCUME~1\Robert\LOCALS~1\Temp\sp.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = file://C:\DOCUME~1\Robert\LOCALS~1\Temp\sp.html
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = file://C:\DOCUME~1\Robert\LOCALS~1\Temp\sp.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,HomeOldSP = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,HomeOldSP = about:blank
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {DA27B13A-6EC9-4428-A689-AD2E11DBC8E3} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\gbk.dll

Then start APM.
In the upper window select explorer.exe
In the lower window find and rightclick the BHO from the HijackThis log: gbk.dll
Select Unload DLL and click OK on the prompts that follow.

Reboot and scan with AdAware (check for updates first!) to remove the txt and html protocol association.

Post a fresh HijackThis log.

there is no gbk.dll under explorer.exe

thanks for all your help but it looks like I'm just gonna have to live with this.
