Missing desktop and Icons - Different twist
Turn on the PC log into my usual account I have a pop up message that says something happen with the registry but it would solve the problem I click ok and when it goes to load the user. I get no icons, taskbar or desktop. When I bring up the task manager... there is no explorer.exe I go to run to load it manually I get an error message that there is no program associated with this file and to set up assocations in folder options. I try run msconfig to do a clean boot.. same message. I try to start in safe mode still no explorer.exe no desktop icons no task bar.
I'm at work so I don't have access to the PC right now. Any suggestions would be appreciated. |

it sounds like you have an infection of malware. the pop up with a notice about somthing wrong with the registry is very commmon. Please download the following programs from the sites listed along side.
Adware : http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/ Spybot Search and Destroy : http://www.safer-networking.org/ Hiajckthis :http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html Install all of them to you pc at home. and run them in the order i posted them. When running Hijackthis, please choose the scan and save log option. then copy and paste your log into a new thread over at the antivirus forums below http://forums.devshed.com/forumdisp...aysprune=&f=117

Ok I scanned using adaware and spybot last night after I finally was able to fix the problem with my pc. After running both program I had problems with windows crashing and restarting my PC so I had to do a system restore to the point before I did the spyware scan.
Here is the log from Hijack: Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 8:51:06 AM, on 5/28/2005 Platform: Windows XP SP1 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP1 (6.00.2800.1106) Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgamsvr.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgupsvc.exe C:\Program Files\Executive Software\Diskeeper\DkService.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\nvsvc32.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Toolbar\TBPSSvc.exe C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ZONELABS\vsmon.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinTools\WToolsS.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\WINDOWS\System32\ctfmon.exe C:\PROGRA~1\ZONELA~1\ZONEAL~1\zlclient.exe C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_01\bin\jusched.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgcc.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Toolbar\TBPS.exe C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\WinTools\WToolsA.exe C:\Program Files\D-Tools\daemon.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Toolbar\PIB.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinTools\WSup.exe C:\Program Files\Spybot - hello mellie974 ,
It is unfortunate that you ran system restore. System Restore porbably has just restored all the malware and infections that spybot and adaware tried to remove. I would like you to do the following. Please not them down somewhere or take a print out of these intructions because they are quite lenghty. ================================================ i want you to reboot into safe mode. To get to Safe Mode, press the F8 key just as Windows is about to boot. If you use a multiboot system, this is the point where the boot menu appears; if not, just keep tapping F8 as the machine boots until the menu appears. Now once in safe mode Please check if you have enabled the option to show hidden file in windows. Quote:
now run hijackthis and scan your pc. then please fix the following entries by placing a check against them and clicking fix. Quote:
Please check you have not missed any entries. close hiajck this and please do the following: ****************************************** Go to Start - Run and type "services.msc" and hit Enter. Scroll down to the list and check if the service "Wintools for IE Service" is present - if yes: Double-click the service, then on the next screen, click the Stop button if available and change the Startup Type to Disabled, then hit Apply, Ok. ********************************************* Then navigate back to the run prompt and run the following commands (do not be alarmed if it says the file is not present) regsvr32 /u "\Program Files\Common Files\WinTools\WToolsB.dll" regsvr32 /u "\Program Files\Common Files\WinTools\btiein.dll" regsvr32 /u "\Program Files\Toolbar\toolbar.dll" ******************************************** now to delete the files form your system navigate to this folder Program Files\Common Files and delete the entire WinTools directory go back to the Program Files\ directory and delet this folder Toolbar ******************************************** now please navigate to the following folder: C:\Documents and Settings\ <your user name> \Local Settings\Temporary Internet Folder\ and delete all the contents of this folder do the same for this folder C:\Documents and Settings\ <your user name> \Local Settings\Temp\ ********************************************* navigate to this folder C:\WINDOWS\‘Downloaded Program Files and delete any entries with the following names (do not worry if they do not exist): ‘{8A05273A-2EA5-42DE-AA75-59EA7D9D50D7}’, ‘{59450DB0-341D-4436-B380-B8377D8B6796}’, ‘{D6E66235-7AA6-44ED-A06C-6F2033B1D993}’ ‘{26E8361F-BCE7-4F75-A347-98C88B418322}’ ********************************************** Now please do the following (do not worry if these entries do not exist) : type regedit in the run prompt and navigate to the following keys HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID and delete any keys with the following numbers {26E8361F-BCE7-4F75-A347-98C88B418322} and {87067F04-DE4C-4688-BC3C-4FCF39D609E7}. Now go to the key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\PROTOCOLS, and the entry for the Name-Space Handler\res\WToolsB.ResProtocol key can also go. Next navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SoftwareMicrosoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software, and delete the ‘AUI’ and ‘STO’ subkeys, and the ‘TUID’ entry. ********************************************* Almost done now.... ![]() please run Adaware and Spybot again at this point. If you have any issues with windows stability after this, please run the following command friom the run prompt sfc /scannow DO NOT RUN SYSTEM RESTORE PLEASE. Then reboot into windows normally and run hijackthis and post a fresh log here. Last edited by oneMSBi : May 28th, 2005 at 10:21 AM. |
