Missing desktop and Icons - Different twist

Turn on the PC log into my usual account I have a pop up message that says something happen with the registry but it would solve the problem I click ok and when it goes to load the user. I get no icons, taskbar or desktop. When I bring up the task manager... there is no explorer.exe I go to run to load it manually I get an error message that there is no program associated with this file and to set up assocations in folder options. I try run msconfig to do a clean boot.. same message. I try to start in safe mode still no explorer.exe no desktop icons no task bar.

I'm at work so I don't have access to the PC right now. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

it sounds like you have an infection of malware. the pop up with a notice about somthing wrong with the registry is very commmon. Please download the following programs from the sites listed along side.

Adware : http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/
Spybot Search and Destroy : http://www.safer-networking.org/
Hiajckthis :http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html

Install all of them to you pc at home. and run them in the order i posted them. When running Hijackthis, please choose the scan and save log option. then copy and paste your log into a new thread over at the antivirus forums below

Ok I scanned using adaware and spybot last night after I finally was able to fix the problem with my pc. After running both program I had problems with windows crashing and restarting my PC so I had to do a system restore to the point before I did the spyware scan.

Here is the log from Hijack:

hello mellie974 ,

It is unfortunate that you ran system restore. System Restore porbably has just restored all the malware and infections that spybot and adaware tried to remove. I would like you to do the following. Please not them down somewhere or take a print out of these intructions because they are quite lenghty.

================================================

i want you to reboot into safe mode.
To get to Safe Mode, press the F8 key just as Windows is about to boot. If you use a multiboot system, this is the point where the boot menu appears; if not, just keep tapping F8 as the machine boots until the menu appears.

Now once in safe mode

Please check if you have enabled the option to show hidden file in windows.
Quote:
To enable the viewing of Hidden files follow these steps:
1. Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
2. Double-click on the My Computer icon.
3. Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
4. After the new window appears select the View tab.
5. Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
6. Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
7. Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
8. Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
9. Press the Apply button and then the OK button and quit my computer.
10. Now your computer is configured to show all hidden files.

now run hijackthis and scan your pc.
then please fix the following entries by placing a check against them and clicking fix.
