My computer sending out spam email after I caught spyware/virus

I caught some spyware/virus last night and cleaned it up. It was one where my desktop background was black and there was large yellow words saying stuff like WARNING SPYWARE, click here for removal. It took me to a site along the lines of topantispyware.com or something. I remembering getting rid of a file called flsmngr.dll and spoolsrv.exe and some other associated random files which finally fixed it.

It also happened to shut down my Norton antivirus. I ended up reinstalling it and it works fine now. But my computer now seems to be sending out random spam emails. I'm also receiving bounce backs about a random email being sent by me infected with a virus. Whatever is on my computer is sending out bunches of emails ever few minutes and Norton is trying to scan them. For now, I shut off the outgoing email scan because it was annoying me....scanning every few minutes on emails sending out in the background.

Any thoughts? I read about firewall programs to block the outgoing emails, but I really want to get rid of this thing, not just prevent it from doing what it tries to do. Any other way out? Thanks.

Okay. I think it is fine now. I got rid of the cmdtel.exe and ahtun.exe services and deleted the files. Doesn't seem to be sending out any spam emails now. Hopefully it has been fixed. I'll let you know if it comes back. Thanks guys.

Please update HijackThis, you are using an outdated version. The new version does a better job of detecting malware:

Open HijackThis, click Config > Misc Tools > Check for Update online

The problem seems to be gone, although I still received a few emails that said I sent out an email with a virus. Maybe these were just late emails that bounced back?

Please follow these instructions carefully.

You might want to print these instructions for reference or copy and paste them into notepad and save them on your desktop, as you will be off the internet while using HijackThis.

I would like you to unregister this dll:

Click Start > Run > enter (copy and paste is better) the following text, then click OK.

regsvr32 /u C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\lsd_f3.dll

Next...

Boot into Safe Mode. Restart your computer, start tapping F8 when your computer first starts booting, there will be a menu displayed > select Safe Mode.

It is OK if some of these items are no longer listed.

Update the Radius definitions file. Right click this link and select "Save as". Save it to the directory where you installed TDS3 and let it replace the old Radius file.

Start TDS3 > at the top of the program click System Testing > Full system scan > after scanning right-click the report, save as scandump.txt > submit the scandump.txt file into your next post.

Ok, you are doing great!

Yes, we need to locate these files and deal with them.

Boot into Safe Mode. Restart your computer, start tapping F8 when your computer first starts booting, there will be a menu displayed > select Safe Mode.

Using Windows Explorer locate and rename these two files.

c:\ntdetect.hta to ntdetect.old

Note: please do not alter any other ntdetect files. as they are necessary for the proper operation of your computer!

c:\windows\system32\thun32.dll to thun32.old

Reboot normally.

Next...

Because you were infected, backups of the malware may be in System Restore.

1 Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2 Click the System Restore tab.
3 Check the "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives" check box.
4 Click Apply
5 this will delete all existing restore points. Click Yes to do this.
6 Click OK.

Reboot

1 Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2 Click the System Restore tab.
3 Uncheck the "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives" check box.
4 Click Apply
5 Click OK.

Create a new Restore Point:

Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore > tick Create a Restore Point > Next > enter a name for the Restore Point Creation (Today, Removed Spyware, etc.) > Create > Close.

The date and time will automatically be added.

What will I be doing with the 'ntdetect.old' and the 'thun32.old'? Will I be deleting those?

Yes, give it a week or so just to make sure they are not needed by any other programs. Then you can delete them. They should be harmless now that they are renamed.


It's installed by TDS3. If you use the program until the trial period ends and decide not to buy it, you can uninstall it and fix the 01 with HijackThis.


A firewall protects you from known malicious traffic and lets you decide what internet traffic occurs on your machine. You also have control over what programs/files acces the internet from your computer. It will not interfere with normal internet operations.

Check for updates for Windows and Internet Explorer every week or so. Download each critical update one by one, rebooting when necessary.. Repeat this until you get the message "no critical updates available"
