Norton Internet Security 2004 Pro problems

I'm running Norton Internet Security 2004 on Win XP Home. NIS Program Control creates an alert "A remote system is attempting to access your computer." The remote address is always different. It happens so frequently that I am sometimes clicking "Block" as much as I am typing. Norton support was no help at all. Turning off intrusion alert reporting does not switch this off. Have searched for adware and viruses.

I've tried re-installing NIS but the problem started again as soon as the install was complete. I've tried importing settings from a colleagues working version that has no problems but that still hasnt sorted it.

It's possible you just could be getting hit that hard from the outside. Especially if you have cable or DSL. Consider posting a HijackThis log. Maybe the attacks are being initiated from your computer (a Trojan for example).

Enable everything in MSCONFIG (if you have disabled anything). Go to Start > Run > msconfig > click Startup Tab > everything should have a checkmark to the left of it. Please note: this does not apply to Windows 2000 users.

Download HijackThis (link below). Make sure you install HijackThis to a permanent folder such as C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe as it creates backups of what we will fix. Run the program, press Scan, after a brief pause press Save log. Notepad will open, copy and paste the entire log into your post. Do not fix anything yet, most of what's in the log is needed!

On my dsl, there are around 2-5 unwanted incoming attempts per minute. Mostly these are infected computer that are scanning looking for unpatched computers.

All are very small free programs. Occasionally check for updates.

Adjust your security settings for ActiveX:
Go to Internet Options/Security/Internet, press 'default level', then OK.
Now press "Custom Level."
In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to 'prompt', and 'Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe" to 'disable'.

Check for updates for Windows and Internet Explorer every week or so. Download each critical update one by one, rebooting when necessary.. Repeat this until you get the message "no critical updates available"

thanks for all that, so are you saying that i do have a trojan or some kind of virus then?

I do use spybot S&D, does this change anything?, just want to make sure before i make these changes.

i don't see any trojans or any other serious malware on your computer. The items I suggested you remove are all minor, but worth taking the time to remove.
