I guess the lesson here is downloads. What you got was from an EXE of some kind so dont save any of those.

Yep, I know what are the files that may be dangerous: executables, dlls, and some MS Office files that may contain macros, and files that I don't even know what kind of files they are. I've been running for years without any permanent antivirus protection and had no problem at all since I avoided potentially dangerous files. But... bad luck on me this time.

Everything working fine now after reinstalling. Did a couple of scans and it seems there are no threats anymore. I was a bit worried about the former E drive (now D, after reinstalling) where I first saved the file that originated all the problem, but scans show it's clean.
