You have some cleaning up to do first!

Perform an online virus scan at Trend Micro's Housecall.

Reboot

Download, install and UPDATE Spybot Search and Destroy. Scan and fix all items maked in RED.

Reboot

Download, install and UPDATE Adaware. Scan and fix all checked items.

Reboot

Post a new hijackthis log.

All links are below.

CPU 100% ran per your instructions

OK, found a virus and a trojan and deleted. Spybot ran clean, but ad aware found 28! Crazy since I just cleaned yesterday!

Here is the updated log from HiJack.

Thanks again for all your help.

Please move HijackThis to a permanent folder such as C:\HJT so it can make reliable backups of what we fix.In case something goes wrong, we can depend on them being there.

You have a peper trojan infection. Please download the following uninstaller:

http://www.memorywatcher.com/uninst.exe or
http://mjc1.com/files/scripts/drpeper.html

When you run the uninstaller, you MUST have an internet connection active for it to work.

Please run this twice with a reboot in between.

Run HijackThis, place a checkmark next to the following items. Close ALL other windows and browsers except HijackThis. Click "fix checked".

Your log is clean!

If you are still having problems with 100% CPU can you look in Task Manager and tell me what process is using the most resources?

Still problems

Thanks for all the help. Things are running real slow still and still experiencing 100% cpu. No one process running at 100%, but there are spikes every other second. i have 444 mg of ram and this runs like a 486/16mg!

Another problem I have is with sound. I have integrated soundcard....says all drivers and equipment working properly, but can't accesss volume or speaker controls. They're are not "clickable". Tried to uninstall and reinstall and still not working.

You think I should just reinstall operating system? Maybe get rid of the XP?

I think XP is one of the best OS' that MS ever put out. Although some would beg to differ Maybe your onboard sound device is defective. Has XP ever detected it. Has it ever worked? You may want to disable the onboard sound and install a PCI sound card.

As far as your high CPU usage, you may want to try the online virus scanners:

Housecall (link below).

Symantec: symantec.com/avcenter Click on check for security risks!

Let us know how it goes!

Is it Norton?

Hi This seems to be a really common problem, I've seen it everywhere in postings, but no solutions!!! I have the same problem: My WinXP T41 Thinkpad runs fine, then suddenly for no apparent reason the CPU jumps to 100%, rundll32.exe being the culprit. I noticed:
- When I jam in my USB key this sometimes triggers the rundll32 problem
- When I'm shutting down from this problem ccApp won't die, and this appears to come from (my expired subscription of) Norton AV (via Symantec)
-The other people posting that i've seen also had Norton AV installed. I will try uninstalling this and see what happens. Will let u know. In the meantime, its driving me crazy!
