Requesting help in analyzing a HiJack This log file
To anyone who would be kind enough to take time to help a stranger. First things first thank you in advance. I also would add that I have a rather basic knowledge of computers and since I am posting this I do not consider myself a "knowledgable person." I have had problems with pop-ups and now employ Spy Bot S&D and Adaware. I also use a Zonealarm firewall. Despite my precautions http://www.valuesponsor.com/?page
is now my new homepage and I cannot get rid of it. Here is the log file from HiJack This Logfile of HijackThis v1.98.2 Scan saved at 8:58:07 PM, on 10/14/2004 Platform: Windows XP SP1 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP1 (6.00.2800.1106) Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zlclient.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_05\bin\jusched.exe C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\ZoneLabs\vsmon.exe C:\Program Files\iPod\bin\iPodService.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\wuauclt.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\RUNDLL32.EXE C:\Program Files\LimeWire\LimeWire 4.0.8\LimeWire.exe C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe C:\Documents and Settings\Eric Kiley\Local Settings\Temp\Temporary Directory 1 for hijackthis[1].zip\HijackThis.exe C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\wuauclt.exe R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.whatsfind.com/page.html O2 - BHO: (no name) - {53707962-6F74-2D53-2644-206D7942484F} - C:\PROGRA~1\SPYBOT~1\SDHelper.dll O2 - BHO: Google Toolbar Helper - {AA58ED58-01DD-4d91-8333-CF10577473F7} - c:\program files\google\googletoolbar1.dll O3 - Toolbar: &Radio - {8E718888-423F-11D2-876E-00A0C9082467} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\msdxm.ocx O3 - Toolbar: &Google - {2318C2B1-4965-11d4-9B18-009027A5CD4F} - c:\program files\google\googletoolbar1.dll O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iTunesHelper] C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Zone Labs Client] "C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zlclient.exe" O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_05\bin\jusched.exe O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present O7 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System, DisableRegedit=1 O8 - Extra context menu item: &Google Search - res://c:\program files\google\GoogleToolbar1.dll/cmsearch.html O8 - Extra context menu item: Backward Links - res://c:\program files\google\GoogleToolbar1.dll/cmbacklinks.html O8 - Extra context menu item: Cached Snapshot of Page - res://c:\program files\google\GoogleToolbar1.dll/cmcache.html O8 - Extra context menu item: E&xport to Microsoft Excel - res://C:\PROGRA~1\MICROS~2\Office10\EXCEL.EXE/3000 O8 - Extra context menu item: Similar Pages - res://c:\program files\google\GoogleToolbar1.dll/cmsimilar.html O8 - Extra context menu item: Translate into English - res://c:\program files\google\GoogleToolbar1.dll/cmtrans.html O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\msjava.dll O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Sun Java Console - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\msjava.dll I would also add that I did not notice these problems until after my university e-mail had me download some sort of Java systems patch or whatever it is. Hi Insidecenterout,
I see you have Limewire installed. It is highly recommended that you uninstall it and seek safer alternatives. You might want to print these instructions for reference or copy and paste them into notepad and save them on your desktop, as you will be off the internet while using HijackThis. Please move or unzip HijackThis to a permanent folder such as C:\HJT It is important that it is in it's own folder as it will make important backups of what we will fix. Please open My Computer > double-click your C:\ drive > File > New > Folder > name it HJT and put HijackThis into that folder. Next.... You have a coolwebsearch infection, among other things. Please download CWShredder written by Merijn Bellekom from Here Save it to a convenient location such as your Desktop Press "Check for Update" and download any new updates available. The current version is 1.59.1 Close ALL browser windows or it may not work! Run CWShredder and select "Fix" (do not just Scan). It will automatically remove the infections. Next.... Logoff your internet connection. Run HijackThis, click scan, place a checkmark next to the following items. Close all browsers and any other windows or the fix may not work! Click "fix checked". It is OK if some of these items are no longer listed. R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.whatsfind.com/page.html These resource hogs can be safely removed also: O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE Unless you have the Spybot Search & Destroy option 'Lock homepage from changes' active, or your system administrator put this into place, have HijackThis fix these: O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present O7 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System, DisableRegedit=1 Reboot and post a fresh HijackThis log. I do not see an antivirus program running. Do you have one installed? Tom

The CWShredder took care of the most visible aspect of the problems. Not having an anti-virus program running is an over-sight on my part from my reformat. Unfortunately I see that I have cracked my Norton disk. Would you recommend any other programs? I am pretty sure I can get one that is provided by my university, but I thought I would ask since your advice has been spot on. Sorry about the delay in my reply but I got a little caught up in some things. Thanks once again for your help. |

That log is clean!! Good job!
Because you were infected, backups of the malware may be in System Restore. 1 Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties. 2 Click the System Restore tab. 3 Check the "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives" check box. 4 Click Apply 5 this will delete all existing restore points. Click Yes to do this. 6 Click OK. Reboot 1 Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties. 2 Click the System Restore tab. 3 Uncheck the "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives" check box. 4 Click Apply 5 Click OK. Create a new Restore Point: Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore > tick Create a Restore Point > Next > enter a name for the Restore Point Creation (Today, Removed Spyware, etc.) > Create > Close. The date and time will automatically be added. Then.... These are tools that will help keep you from getting infected again: SpywareBlaster prevents the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests. Blocks spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox. Restricts the actions of potentially dangerous sites in InternetExplorer. http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html SpywareGuard provides a real-time protection solution against spyware that is a great addition to SpywareBlaster's protection method. http://www.wilderssecurity.net/spywareguard.html IE-SPYAD puts over 4000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all. http://www.staff.uiuc.edu/~ehowes/resource.htm#IESPYAD MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm All are very small free programs. Occasionally check for updates. Check for updates for Windows and Internet Explorer every week or so. Download each critical update one by one, rebooting when necessary.. Repeat this until you get the message "no critical updates available" http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ Please take a minute to read: So how did I get infected in the first place? http://forums.net-integration.net/i...?showtopic=3051 Tom |
