Smile svchost.exe - 100% CPU USAGE - hijack this

Hi,

I just want to thank everyone in advance here. I've been using this site for some time now and it's really helpful. I have the following problem.

Sometimes my CPU Usage gets up to 100% and stays like that unless i restart (sometimes when i restart it goes right back up to 100%). I seem to have 3 svchost.exe (SYSTEM) and 2 svchost.exe (NETWORK SERVICE) running. This is taking up 100% of cpu usage. Any help will be greatly appreciated. I am not as familiar with computers as tom is obviously, so if the explanation of my problem sounds weird i can try to explain it if need be. Just so that you know, i download a trojan remover that you (Tom) suggested on another post and have run it a couple hours ago. Since then my computer is running normally i.e. not at 100% CPU usage but i would just feel more comfortable if you still look at my log. Thanks Tom.

Here is my hijack this log (if you notice anything weird plz let me know). Thanks once again

Hi Leafs567,

You might want to print these instructions for reference or copy and paste them into notepad and save them on your desktop, as you will be off the internet while using HijackThis.

If you have any questions before starting the fix, please don't hesitate to ask!

Please go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove programs and remove:

FunWebProducts

Next...

Boot into Safe Mode. Reboot your computer, start tapping F8 when it first starts booting, select Safe Mode.

Run HijackThis, click scan, place a checkmark next to the following items. Close all browsers and any other windows or the fix may not work! Click "fix checked". It is OK if some of these items are no longer listed.

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchAssistant = about:blank
O2 - BHO: MultiMPPObj Class - {002EB272-2590-4693-B166-FBD5D9B6FEA6} - C:\WINDOWS\multimpp.dll

Is this a legit application to your knowledge?
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MiniWorldGolf_Setup.exe] C:\DOCUME~1\MARIUS~1\Desktop\MINIWO~1.EXE /r

These are resource hogs that can be fixed also:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

Next...

Make sure your computer is configured to show all files and folders.
Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden Files and Folders heading select Show Hidden Files and Folders.
Uncheck hide extensions for known file types.
Uncheck the Hide Protected Operating System Files option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

Search for and delete the following files:

C:\WINDOWS\multimpp.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\s16gtd.exe
C:\WINDOWS\satmat.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ycmagm.exe

Next....

Go to Start > Run > type "cleanmgr" (without the quotes). > Select the drive to clean up (usually C ) > Place a checkmark next to the following:

Temporary Internet Files
Recycle Bin
Temporary Files

Then click OK.

Reboot normally.

Please post a fresh HijackThis log.

Tom

Hi Tom,

I've completed the steps in your instructions. Just thought i'd let you know
how it went:

First when I went to the control panel > add/remove i was not able to locate this: FunWebProducts (not a big deal i guess)

After rebooting into safe mode I deleted the files as u indicated in the hijack this log.

Then I tried deleting the four files u listed but wasn't able to find some of them.
There were no search results for C:\WINDOWS\multimpp.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\s16gtd.exe. I dunno if this is because I had already
deleted them in hijackthis.

The one question i had was when i was searching for those files I also found the following and was wondering if I should delete them too:

satmat.ini
SATMAT.EXE-1098AE59.pf
TCMAGM.EXE-3A75633B.pf
"My Name"@pp.multimpp[2].txt (didn't want to show my real name)
Should I delete these??

That's all, computer seems to be working fine. I'll keep u posted. I'll post my hijack this log in a separate post.

satmat.ini can be deleted. Probably used with SATMAT.EXE

SATMAT.EXE is Transponder/aBetterinternet adware variant. It can be deleted. I think it's just a prefetch file (found in C:\Windows\Prefetch). You can safely delete this. In fact, I thought I read Service Pack 2 no longer used Prefetch.

TCMAGM.EXE seems like a randomly named file, in Prefetch, ok to delete.

My Name"@pp.multimpp[2].txt isn't familiar. You can rename it for a while, later you can delete it if not needed. Rename it to My Name"@pp.multimpp[2].old

I will check over your last log.

Tom

Leafs567,

Your final log is clean... Good job!!!

Because you were infected, backups of the malware may be in System Restore.

1 Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2 Click the System Restore tab.
3 Check the "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives" check box.
4 Click Apply
5 this will delete all existing restore points. Click Yes to do this.
6 Click OK.

Reboot

1 Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2 Click the System Restore tab.
3 Uncheck the "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives" check box.
4 Click Apply
5 Click OK.

Create a new Restore Point:

Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore > tick Create a Restore Point > Next > enter a name for the Restore Point Creation (Today, Removed Spyware, etc.) > Create > Close.

The date and time will automatically be added.

Also...

I don't see a firewall running in your log. Are you using the firewall in Service Pack 2's Security Center? If not...

ZoneAlarm has a free firewall:
