Something keeps adding favourites
I think something has infected my home PC (windows XP). It tries to change my home page, adds undesirable sites to my favourites, sometimes launches a new window, and sometimes goes from Google to an unexpected site in same window. I have Nortin antivirus, AdAware, SpyBot, CWShredder, SpyGuard and SpyBlaster, but can't get rid. Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Yes still having the same problem, even after upgrading to Norton AV 2005.

Norton scan says:
explorer.exe Download.Dialer Dialer found Delete failed

The problems are that:
1. IE opens a second window with search, money lending, dial tone, or porn.
2. My home page keeps changing, (e.g. to www.globaladserver.com).
3. Several sites are being added to my favourites.

You might want to print these instructions for reference or copy and paste them into notepad and save them on your desktop, as you will be off the internet while using HijackThis.

Please move or unzip HijackThis to a permanent folder such as C:\HJT It is important that it is in it's own folder as it will make important backups of what we will fix.

Please go to Start > My Computer > double-click your C:\ drive > click: File > New > Folder > name it HJT and put HijackThis into that folder.

You have a coolwebsearch infection, among other things. Please download CWShredder from Here Save it to a convenient location such as your Desktop

Please do not run it yet, you will run it later!

Next...

Boot into Safe Mode. Restart your computer, start tapping F8 when your computer first starts booting, select Safe Mode.

Run CWShredder and select "Fix" (do not just Scan). It will automatically remove the infections.

Run HijackThis, click scan, place a checkmark next to the following items. Close all browsers and any other windows or the fix may not work! Click "fix checked". It is OK if some of these items are no longer listed.

Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.

Uncheck hide extensions for known file types.
Uncheck the Hide Protected Operating System Files option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

Search for and delete the following files:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\siq.dll

Next....

Go to Start > Run > type "cleanmgr" (without the quotes). > Select the drive to clean up (usually C ) > Place a checkmark next to the following:

Thanks for the very clear instructions.

I ran CWS but it only queried one file; C:\WINDOWS\monitor.exe. As it wasn't a random set of characters, I followed their advice and didn't fix it. Is that OK?

Also, I showed hidden files, but neither of the files you asked me to search for were found: siq.dll and twink64.exe

Because you were infected, backups of the malware may be in System Restore.

1 Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2 Click the System Restore tab.
3 Check the "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives" check box.
4 Click Apply
5 this will delete all existing restore points. Click Yes to do this.
6 Click OK.

Reboot

1 Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2 Click the System Restore tab.
3 Uncheck the "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives" check box.
4 Click Apply
5 Click OK.

Create a new Restore Point:

Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore > tick Create a Restore Point > Next > enter a name for the Restore Point Creation (Today, Removed Spyware, etc.) > Create > Close.

The date and time will automatically be added.
