Strange problem but definitely not a virus.

Can anybody explain what these strange lines are that are appearing on my computer? I have attached a screenshot...

I have checked for viruses using Norton, McAfee and AVG and managed to remove anything that appeared. I also ran spybot and adaware and removed everything that appeared but unfortunately I keep getting these strange lines appearing on my screen.

They appear in random positions and continue to build up until I change to another window....at that point the screen is cleared and the lines begin the process again

An interesting point is that I installed service pack 2 and instead of green the lines are now yellow
Any ideas what this could relate to?

Hi bhutz,

It could be video card / monitor related.....

It wouldn't hurt to post a HijackThis log.

Download HijackThis (link below). Make sure you install HijackThis to a permanent folder such as C:\HJT as it creates backups of what we will fix. Run the program, press Scan, after a brief pause... press Save log. Notepad will open, copy and paste the entire log into your post. Do not fix anything yet, most of what's in the log is needed!

Before we start....

Is this a legitimate program to your knowledge?

C:\PROGRA~1\MI4F93~1\webtool.exe

Is this set intentionalally as you search page?

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchURL = http://minisearch.startnow.com/%s

Did you add these entries to your hosts file?

O1 - Hosts: 65.120.116.172 mini.aimster.com
O1 - Hosts: 65.120.116.173 lite.aimster.com
O1 - Hosts: 65.120.116.174 www.aimster.com

Will check with you later....

I did a search for webtool.exe and found it relates to Microsoft Web Application Stress Tool which is something that I have definitely used in the past, although it is no longer used so wouldn't mind getting rid of it now

No longer use aimster so wouild also like to get rid of those entries from host file (what is a host file just out of interest?)

The short answer is that the Hosts file is like an address book. When you type an address like www.yahoo.com into your browser, the Hosts file is consulted to see if you have the IP address, or "telephone number," for that site. If you do, then your computer will "call it" and the site will open. If not, your computer will ask your ISP's (internet service provider) computer for the phone number before it can "call" that site. Most of the time, you do not have addresses in your "address book," because you have not put any there. Therefore, most of the time your computer asks for the IP address from your ISP to find sites.

If you put ad server names into your Hosts file with your own computer's IP address, your computer will never be able to contact the ad server. It will try to, but it will be simply calling itself and get a "busy signal" of sorts. Your computer will then give up calling the ad server and no ads will be loaded, nor will any tracking take place. Your choices for blocking sites are not just limited to blocking ad servers. You may block sites that serve advertisements, sites that serve objectionable content, or any other site that you choose to block.

http://accs-net.com/hosts/what_is_hosts.html

That's why a program like MVPS Hosts file is used:

MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer

I will post a link to the MVPS Hosts file after you are clean.

I will check over your log tomorrow.

Tom

I downloaded the HOSTS file and put in it the specified folder, I also saw that my old file contained the Aimster entries.
Not sure what you mean by "after I am clean", do you mean removing R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchURL = http://minisearch.startnow.com/%s
Not quite sure how to do that.

Sorry, I meant after I post a fix for your HijackThis log entries.

You can edit the aimster entries out of the Hosts file by opening it with Notepad if you like.

I will check over your log now.

Ah ok, thanks.
I used the HOSTS file from the site you pointed out, so I guess the Aimster entries are now gone

Please go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following:

Microsoft Web Application Stress Tool
Aimster
NavHelper

Next...

Please move or unzip HijackThis to a permanent folder such as C:\HJT It is important that it is in it's own folder as it will make important backups of what we will fix.

Please open My Computer > double-click your C:\ drive > File > New > Folder > name it HJT and put HijackThis into that folder

Next...

You might want to print these instructions for reference or copy and paste them into notepad and save them on your desktop, as you will be off the internet while using HijackThis.

If you have any questions before starting the fix, please don't hesitate to ask!

Logoff your internet connection. Run HijackThis, click scan, place a checkmark next to the following items. Close all browsers and any other windows or the fix may not work! Click "fix checked". It is OK if some of these items are no longer listed.

OK, I attempted to go through the instructions that you gave me but unfortunately I cannot restart in safe mode as my system just appears to hang as it starts to load the .sys files and all that. I left it for half hour but it would not boot up windows

Also I made those suggested fixes in hijackThis but now my PC appears to running a lot slower then it was before those changes

Any ideas why this may be and why my computer doesn't complete the safe mode boot up (by the way the writing on the boot up screen is extremely garbled and full of random symbols, so much so that you can barely see things like RAM, processor and boot up options because it is hard to make out :S)
