Svchost.exe @ 100% CPU Usage (Help!)
Hello,
Recently i have been doing my normal things and all of a sudden today after work i booted up comp, and it was really laggy and didnt let me use my taskbar (due to frozen) and i checked my tasks and SVCHost.exe is running at 100%. I have ran Adaware, AVG, SpyFerret, Pest Patrol, The Cleaner, Housecall, HiJack This. I have done these steps i talk about before and after i have done in Safemode Only. I have also done a number of things in the computer settings like checking out whats starting with windows etc... Running Processes From HiJacThis Log: C:\windows\System32\smss.exe C:\windows\System32\winlogon.exe C:\windows\System32\services.exe C:\windows\System32\lsass.exe C:\windows\System32\svchost.exe C:\windows\System32\svchost.exe C:\windows\System32\spoolsv.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVG7\avgamsvr.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVG7\avgupsvc C:\windows\System32\nvsvc32.exe C:\windows\System32\slserv.exe C:\windows\Explorer.EXE C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVG7\avgcc.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVG7\avgemc.exe C:\Documents and Settings\Chris Lenga\Start Menu\System Utilities\HijackThis.exe I would put the whole log but its way too much to type and i looked it over real well and nothing looks bad in the rest of the log... I will remind you that currently my burner on my other comp is not working for some reason, nor is my floppy or internet connection so i had to print it out. As i looked through the hijackthis log everything pretty much was down to earth simple to read and i knew what it all was. Standard system specs are.... AMD Athlon 3200+ 512 Ram Cable Connection to the Internet Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack One (SP1) Any help would be much appreciated as i am using the computer at work to do this since mine as i said does not have internet connection ![]() |

Quick note...
I am very strict on adware and viruses etc... Mainly overall PC performance i keep at an all time HIGH. I run scans quite a bit throughout the week to keep the comp running as smooth as posible |

Luckyice, that was spam. It was no use to the topic at all.
However, I think I can help. Try restarting. If that doesn't work, try booting up without any internet access. If you have a PCI ethernet card, disconnect that. Usually svchost has something to do with those. |

Mate, sounds like you have the symptoms of the Blaster virus. Are you able to update that definitions list and perform a full virus scan on your machine?

I cannot do anything to my comp that has to do with internet at all. Right now i cant even use internet explorer on the comp due to it not doing anything...
I dont know what to do... Should i try to get the blaster remove tool things from norton on this comp and burn it to cd and open on that comp? Do you think it would make a difference? |

spoolsv.exe hogging 99% of cpu - the fix
spoolsv.exe hogging 99% of cpu - the fix
Go to Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services and stop the Print Spooler. Turn off the printer. Now go to C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\PRINTERS and delete the files there. I found '00020.SHD' and '00020.SPL'. Now turn your printer back on and restart the service. Check task manager, spoolsv.exe should be at 00%. Whew! ![]() |

I had the same problem for the past week and I was going nuts. this svc host file it's not a normal window file...it only appears so! I could not even do windows updates...I would get error messages! I tried again and again, and finally I did and it looks like this svchost malware is not there anymore. I also used avg and it did not detect anything, then I used norton and it detected a virus.... |

nagual: please create a new thread rather than replying to an existing one. Otherwise problems get difficult to follow. I also suggest that you post a HijackThis log with the latest version of the program.

The Most Common Fix
There is actually one very common thing that causes this problem, and it is easy to fix. I have no idea WHY, but when you turn on windows automatic updates, sometimes it just massively screws up. I do not know why or how, but if you go to automatic updates in control panel, and just turn them off entirely, the CPU usage problem goes away completely.
