TaskMgr.exe has generated errors message keeps occuring...

Hi

Please can anyone help me... when I open up the Task Manager to view the current applications to end one of the tasks the following message comes up: "TaskMgr.exe has generated errors and will be shutdown by Windows. The program will need to be restarted."

And when I shut down the computer it comes up with a dialog box saying "Ending Task Win Min"...where I have to press End Task as it says the program is not responding. Also, the computer is running very slowly.

I carried a system scan on my C drive using Symantec. It said there were 9 viruses in total and all had been quarentined. I then went into Symantec console to view the Quarentine folder to delete the files...however there were only 7 listed, which I deleted. Upon restarting the computer in normal mode the same message appears when I try to view the tasks in Task Manager, and the computer runs really slowly and the "Win Min" ending program box appears on shut down.

I suspect it is because there are two virus files unaccounted for or there is a virus which could not be picked up by Symantec or has infected something relating to TaskMgr.exe. If I re-run the virus check but first start the computer in 'safe mode' will this expose the 2 viruses that seem to be missing from the quarantine list? I have deleted all temporary files, cookies etc but no joy. What other advice can anyone recommend and what virus is likely to cause this?

Thank you very much for any help.

Matt

Hey Matt,

Download HijackThis (link below). Make sure you install HijackThis to a permanent folder such as C:\HJT as it creates backups of what we will fix. Run the program, press Scan, after a brief pause press Save log. Notepad will open, copy and paste the entire log into your post. Do not fix anything yet, most of what's in the log is needed!

Hi Tom

Many thanks for your reply. I appreciate your help. I've installed Hijack This as suggested and saved the log without fixing anything. The following is what is in the log:

Please can you tell me the next step to resolving this if possible? The Win Min message still keeps appearing on shut down, as well as the "TaskMgr has generated errors" when I go to view the Task Manager processes (by pressing CTRL ALT DEL).

Thank you for any assistance.

Matt

Hi I think I've fixed the problem. Thanks for offering help. I downloaded something called "Ad-Aware Se Personal" which is free from http://www.download.com/3000-8022-10045910.html which actually removed the 'suspicious' items permanently. If anyone else has problems persisting, even after running Spybot and CWshredder I can recommend this ad-ware s/w as a solution.

Well, its taken almost a day to solve this problem since it started yesterday but all seems fine now... thankfully for now!

Matt
