You have a couple of hold overs from when you had Norton/Symantec Av on your computer. Go to add/remove programs and remove anything Norton/Symantec from there.

After that post a hopefully "final" HJT log. Are you having any more issues?

Thanks for that. In respect to other problems if I had posted a few days ago I would have said no, but had a pop-up today. Nothing like before, but i will monitor it and let you know how it goes.

In respect of removing Nortons/Symantec - I would like to keep this anti-virus as I have a few more months on a paid subscription. After this runs out I will get a new anti-virus program - so I ask this question - what is the best anti-virus on the market? Very subjective I know, but your thoughts would be apprectaited.

The log looks clean.
I see McAfee as your security package. The Norton looks like the update program only. Is there something I am missing?



What kind of popup what did it say and what were you doing when it happend?

Lets flush the system restore.
Start->Control Panel->System, System restore. Check "Turn off System Restore" and reboot. That will erase all restore points.
After reboot, go back in and turn System Restore back on. That will flush system restore out




Computer security is not about the programs we use its about us as the users and how we use our computers.
That being said. Todays protective software is rooted so deep into Windows and they are not ment to play well with other similar software.
The best defense is to use your computer safely and wisely and choose ONE AV program and to supplement it with ONLINE scans from time to time to back up your defenses. More than one installed actually does more harm than good and will fight each other for system memory.

Personally I use AVG free as my AV. For my anti spyware I have Superantispyware, A2free, spybot,AdAwareSE(dont like the new one as of now). I use a Hosts file and Firefox with the NoScript addon as my browser. I use this combo with XP and Vista since I dual boot.

I have not had an infection that I have not knowingly brought on my self in several years. I have not had to use any of these programs to scan my own computer for about 4 years now. The reason for that is I know where the bad stuff comes from and how it works so I avoid problems before they start. The more you know how the crud works the easier it is to avoid it.

13) Do loan your laptop to the next door neighbour for the weekend and give him your Admin account login so he can get his project done with no hassles

14) Let the Babysitter use your laptop for 'schoolwork'
