Hi computerproz,

You might want to print these instructions for reference, as you will be off the internet while using HijackThis.

Please move or unzip HijackThis to a permanent folder such as C:\HJT\ It is important that it is in it's own folder as it will make important backups of what we will fix. Please open My Computer > double-click your C:\ drive > File > New > Folder > name it HJT and put HijackThis into that folder.

Then....

Logoff your internet connection. Run HijackThis, close all browsers and any other windows, click scan, place a checkmark next to the following items. Click "fix checked". It is OK if some of these items are no longer listed.

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

This is a resource hog that is ok to fix also:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot

Reboot and post a fresh hijackthis log.

You mention you are trying to fix the registry. What exactly are the problems that you are having?

Tom

Cool

Thanks, Tom. I appreciate the feedback. As you can tell from my new log file, I cleaned it up a bit. It does not seem to have had much effect on my PC. It is doing the same thing as before.

The real problem I am having is with Windows Media Player and any other application that I try to play a video file in.

The result is always the same. I open the file. It does not play. It DOES NOT hang my PC until I try to close the file. When I do, my PC hangs. I can usually get a manual restart but that is not much of a victory so I need to correct what is causing it.

I can use other programs without any problems as long as I don't try to close the video file or play another one.

WMP also has difficulty in playing audio files. However, MusicMatch and Coolplayer and my other player apps will all play audio files.

On the other hand, Quicktime will not install. I tried both versions 5 & 6. It stops responding when it gets to the modification of the registry. I cannot uninstall because the uninstaller is not there. I cannot use Add/Remove programs because the entry is not there probably because it did not finish. I cannot uninstall WMP either. I tried to reinstall but with no success.

I can manually remove enough of the quicktime files to have it install again but it does the same thing no matter what I try.

I am thinking it is a registry-related issue but I could be wrong.

I had already tried the programs you listed above and a few others. The result...not much has changed. Here is the new log from Hijack this:

Most of what was in the initial post above is gone but I still have the same problem. If you have any ideas, I am all ears.

Thanks again for the help.

Your log is clean.

I would use System Restore. Keep going back in restore points until you feel the problem is resolved.

Also...

Your operating system make 5 copies of the registry that you can restore.

You can read through this MSKB article:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;221512

Use it at your own risk! I cannot guarantee success or failure of this procedure.

Backup your critical data first!!!

Tom
