Winlogon.exe Problem (displeaser you out there?)

Saw a previous post and tried everything first before I posted this (Spybot, AVG Free, Ewido, Ad-Aware SE, Vundofix, and Pandasoft). Found no viruses, just adware and cookies.

Here's how this problem started:

Purchased new camera and Lexar Pro 133x Compact Flash. Compact Flash said to move folder to computer before formatting. I did. Decided I wanted to rename the folder, then all hell broke loose.

Where you would normally just type the new name of the folder, a scrolling dashed line automatically ran and would not stop. I finally got it to but now am experiencing the following problem...

When restarting my computer, I get a black screen with a blinking cursor in the upper left corner. At the same time, I hear a screaching tone start (my harddrive?) - it sounds about 10 times, the pitch goes up for another 10, and then the pitch goes up again for another 10. I then get the standard white bar across the bottom as windows loads and have had no issue starting up, thankfully.

Everything will be okay for a while, I can do normal stuff, surf the web, etc and then *BAM* every possible text box will begin to fill with the number 9 and not stop...

I've checked my task manager and see that when this happens, winlogon.exe is running and eating about 15% of my system.

Restart computer, everything again as described above.

I did run HiJack This. The results are below...

Any help is appreciated!! I'm tearing my hair out! If displeaser can help, I be happy to buy you a Guinness when I'm back in Dublin

Not Just winlogon.exe ...

Ok, now it's really got me nuts. So far outlook, explorer, weatherbug and winlogon are "taking turns" gobbling up my resources to the tune of 98-99 percent...

What gives? Any ideas where to go from here?

Thanks again!

Hiya,

just to be clear. Youve run Spybot, AVG Free, Ewido, Ad-Aware SE. Did you update them all first with their latest signitures/definitions? Was there anything they or Pandasoft detected but was unable to remove?

If you reboot your machine into safemode do you get the same problems after you logon to windows?

I'll start having a look at your hijackthis log but if you can let me know of the above in the meantime.

Displeaser

If you reboot your machine into safemode do you get the same problems after you logon to windows?

I'll start having a look at your hijackthis log but if you can let me know of the above in the meantime.

Yes - I updated them all first. I am running the TrojanHunter as I type then will try the safemode to see if the problem occurs there...

A friend of mine who does computers thinks it may just be the hard drive getting ready to go. I'm gonna try the ideas I get here first then I guess it's "back up" time

Hiya,

your friend probably gave you good advice. A screeching HD is not a good sign(think of a screaming engine). Make a backup ASAP. maybe it was just coincidentle this all happened at the same time. (sorry i'm dyslexic )

Once you have a backup run a disk check and a defrag of your hard-drive. After that see how it boots, if it boots fine maybe there was just a couple of bad sectors on your HD.

Post back here what your results are & we will be glad to help.

Keeping My Fingers Crossed...

Ran a defrag last night then followed up with your suggestions. Everything seems perfect!! No problems all night (I've given it all I got - numerous restarts, renaming of folders, multiple program openings, etc).
Thank you both so much!
Trojan Hunter found the following and fixed it in the suspicious registry entry:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\OM_Monitor

After that, I ran Hijackthis again - deleted the files that were suggested - and restarted the computer.

The scretching is gone, startup is normal and no more of the running text.

If it starts up again I'll probably just replace the hard drive but will definately check back with you guys first

Thank so much - you really helped me and I appreciate it!

displeaser, I'll catch you at The Temple Bar!!

Thats excellent, still probably a good idea to make a backup now though just to be sure.
