AVG free edition 2012, components can't be fixed
Hi, I ran an antivirus today and it says I have 15 rootkits and 2 infections but it says the files they are in should not be destroyed. My AVG also says 'you are not protected' at the top, so I press the fix component button and it says the compnents can't be fixed. I installed AVAST free antivirus and this also says some components can't be fixed. Is it possible on of the viruses disables antivirus components?
What should I do?

the only safe course is to completely erase the hard drive the reinstall a fresh copy of windows from scratch. If you restore any files from the old system be very careful that you don't re-introduce the virus back on your fresh installation.

if you run a boottime scan with Avast, it may/should be able to find and remove those rootkits.
