After password protecting get mysql error?

I've got apache running on winnt. I just wanted to set up a user/pass dialogue to pop up. I set up .htaccess and the encrypted pass. The dialogue comes up as expected but when you enter the correct password, you get a Error 500 Internal Server Error.

When I check the logs, I get:
The socket is not connected: MySQL auth: connect failed: Can't connect to MySQL server on localhost?
Where did this come from? Any ideas?
