apache and heap memory usage

Hi,

I've compiled apache 1.3.12 with mass virtual hosting and php on Solaris 2.6. Now I sometimes see processes using about 7 MB of heap memory (even when php is activated but not being used). Does anybody know how I can check what apache is doing with the heap, or why it becomes so big, or how to stop this?
