Question Apache/PHP for Web Access

Hello everyone,

I have Apache 1.3.20, PHP4.0.6 and MySQL all set up and working properly on my "home" network, using Mandrake 8.0.

I now want to allow web visitors to access some of my pages.

Are there any procedures out there that can do this?

I assume:

1) I need to set up a firewall on the Mandrake box
2) I need to get a dedicated IP address
3) I need to register the name for DNS lookups

Anything else?

Thanks

The most important info you haven't provided: What type of Internet access?

Keep in mind, your message is a little off-topic here since it has nothing to do with Apache directly. It fits better in Linux forum.

I'm sorry...

I set up a website for a non-profit group and now I want to put that website on the Internet so they can access it. So, basically, they type in www.url.com or whatever and they will be directed to my server...

I will also post this to Linux group..

Thanks

No, don't start a new thread since it has already begun here.

You still haven't provided the info I asked in my last post. Let me ask again, do you have cable/DSL or something? Static IP? You need to provide us all that.

Oh, sorry

Well, I have DSL into my house. I assumed that I could not use that DSL for a webserver, or at least it would cost more for a static IP?

I have never really checked to see if they change my IP occassionally.

Well your ISP policy might say no to servers but who really cares? Everybody is running all kind of servers off their DSL connection anyway.

If you have ADSL, the upstream speed probably is too slow if you host several sites. Ask yourself do you think that non-profit group is willing to let you host their site with a slow speed? Not to mention if you don't have static IP with ADSL, you just can't run a reliable server.

Like I always said in my posts, there no longer is such thing as free lunch on the net any longer. If you really wanted to play this toy, you need to pay money to buy it. SDSL is a good option for running servers if it's affordable to you. Either way, you should find someone to host the domain for you instead of hosting it yourself. When the DNS is setup properly, you just need to configure your Linux ifconfig then you can configure <VirtualHost>. Apache will determine your external IP automatically at this point.

OK, I will look into finding a host ISP.

Thanks
