If you start Apache from the start menu it will open a DOS window, start apache and then close the window. Until you get more familiar with Apache I suggest you open a DOS window yourself, CD to the Apache directory and then enter apache. This will start the web server and if the startup fails it will give you a hint as to what went wrong.
Once apache starts don't close the window, because that will kill apache and when you restart it, apache will complain about a previous system failure. To stop the webserver use Stop Apache from the start menu. When the server exits you'll get a DOS prompt back in the DOS window used to start Apache.
Hope this helps.
