I understand server side includes... however, I would like to automatically insert a piece of code at the start of any web page that is requested.

Instead of using an include on every page, is it possible to automate this using some kind of Apache directive?

Thanks,
Ben.

It is easy to do this with PHP, setting the 'auto_prepend_file' and 'auto_append_file' directives in php.ini.
