If you don't escape the period, it will match any single character. In this case, it doesn't particularly matter though.

I did not know this because I do not use the \d style selectors very often. I prefer character classes because they are usually easier to read by anyone with only a little regular expression experience while \d and \D are harder to remember and have to be looked up for the difference. I do make exceptions to this in longer expressions with sub patterns and assertions, but those are rare.

Regardless, I would have piped in, but I've been away for a couple of days.

It's actually the opposite. You should escape periods outside of character classes (square brackets) but do not need to do so inside character classes (although you'll see it a lot).


I also recommend adding an [L] flag to the end of every RewriteRule unless you know why you shouldn't. It'll save you trouble later.
