Lightbulb Crontab - Looking for a start

I would like to start automating some of my maintenance tasks. I know crontab is the way to do it, but I don't know anything about it. Any links or books would be greatly appreciated.

Also, I am running my test server on win98 and my production server is Linux. Will they work the same way? Thanks in advance!

>> Any links

Crontab syntax may differ from version to version, from distribution to distribution and there is no standard way to do it. So start here -> http://www.google.com/search?q=linux+cron+howto

>> Will they work the same way?

Most directives have the same syntax. No, not everything will work the same. Especially when you are NOT compiling from source, and you should know that Apache is highly configurable.

I guess the next question I need to ask is:

Does crontab come with Apache or is is something seperate?

No. It comes with all UNIX-based OSes.

Not knowing the answers to the seeminly simple questions can really screw you up!

O.K. So I'm running Win98, is there a crontab I can install that will work like the linux crontab? This way I can test at home. I know the best thing would be to install Linux but that just not possible right now.

Thanks for the help FreeBSD. If you every put your knowledge on CD, let me know so I can buy it!

Windows comes with that crappy Scheduled Task. Many experienced Windows users prefer to use Wincron

Try -> http://www.google.com/search?q=windows+cron

It seems like I have to put a signature like this:

Start here before asking any questions.
