Force authentication without user file

I would like to provide a directory below which all users must enter authenticated,
but without any restriction on the number
of users, and without knowing them all.

In fact, this directory will contain PHP
pages, that will process authentication
using PHP_AUTH_* variables.

Did anyone succeed in doing this ?
